1 For the end, concerning the wine-presses, a Psalm of David.

2 O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is thy name in all the earth! for thy magnificence is exalted above the heavens.
1 For the Chief Musician; on an instrument of Gath. A Psalm by David. Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens!
3 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou perfected praise, because of thine enemies; that thou mightest put down the enemy and avenger.
2 From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.
4 For I will regard the heavens, the work of thy fingers; the moon and stars, which thou hast established.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained,
5 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
4 what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?
6 Thou madest him a little less than angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour;
5 For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.
7 and thou hast set him over the works of thy hands: thou hast put all things under his feet:
6 You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:
8 sheep and all oxen, yea, and the cattle of the field;
7 All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field,
9 the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea, the [creatures] passing through the paths of the sea.
8 the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
10 O Lord our Lord, how wonderful is thy name in all the earth!
9 Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

  1. Cita 8:2 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter XIV)

    For this reason, too, David said: "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise;" and again: "The heavens declare the glory of God." Hence also it comes to pass, that when the soul is involved in difficulties and distresses, for its own relief it calls out, "Oh" (O), in honour of the letter in question, so …

  2. Cita 8:7 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book V)

    … to be; nor do they slay their own pride, as fowls of the air, nor their own curiosities, by which (like the fishes of the sea) they wander over the unknown paths of the abyss, nor their own extravagance, as the "beasts of the field," that Thou, Lord, "a consuming fire," mayest burn up their lifeless cares and renew them …

  3. Cita 8:2 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VII)

    For instance, when after many miracles children were singing hymns unto Him, hear what saith the prophet, "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise." And again, "I will consider the Heavens, the works of Thy fingers;" which signifies Him to be Maker of the universe.

  4. Cita 8:3 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IV)

    This Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is not circumscribed in any place, nor is He less than the heaven; but the heavens are the works of His fingers, and the whole earth is held in His grasp: He is in all things and around all.

  5. Cita 8:3 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Second Theological Oration)

    For even of this I would have you know that you have only a shadow when you hear the words, "I will consider the heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars," and the settled order therein; not as if he were considering them now, but as destined to do so hereafter.
