2 And he saw two boats standing beside the lake. But the fishermen had climbed down, and they were washing their nets. 2 He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 And so, climbing into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, he asked him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting down, he taught the crowds from the boat. 3 He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 Then, when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Lead us into deep water, and release your nets for a catch.” 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 And in response, Simon said to him: “Teacher, working throughout the night, we caught nothing. But on your word, I will release the net.” 5 Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.”
6 And when they had done this, they enclosed such a copious multitude of fish that their net was rupturing. 6 When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking.
7 And they signaled to their associates, who were in the other boat, so that they would come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were nearly submerged. 7 They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But when Simon Peter had seen this, he fell down at the knees of Jesus, saying, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” 8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.”
9 For astonishment had enveloped him, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish that they had taken. 9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught;
10 Now the same was true of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were associates of Simon. And Jesus said to Simon: “Do not be afraid. From now on, you will be catching men.” 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive.”
11 And having led their boats to land, leaving behind everything, they followed him. 11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.
12 And it happened that, while he was in a certain city, behold, there was a man full of leprosy who, upon seeing Jesus and falling to his face, petitioned him, saying: “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.” 12 While he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.”
13 And extending his hand, he touched him, saying: “I am willing. Be cleansed.” And at once, the leprosy departed from him. 13 He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.
14 And he instructed him that he should tell no one, “But go, show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your cleansing, just as Moses has commanded, as a testimony for them.” 14 He commanded him to tell no one, “But go your way and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing according to what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”
15 Yet word of him traveled around all the more. And great crowds came together, so that they might listen and be cured by him from their infirmities. 15 But the report concerning him spread much more, and great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16 And he withdrew into the desert and prayed. 16 But he withdrew himself into the desert and prayed.
17 And it happened, on a certain day, that he again sat down, teaching. And there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting nearby, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present, to heal them. 17 On one of those days, he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by who had come out of every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them.
18 And behold, some men were carrying in the bed of a man who was paralyzed. And they sought a way to bring him in, and to place him before him. 18 Behold, men brought a paralyzed man on a cot, and they sought to bring him in to lay before Jesus.
19 And not finding a way by which they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they climbed up to the roof, and they let him down through the roof tiles with his bed, into their midst, in front of Jesus. 19 Not finding a way to bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the middle before Jesus.
20 And when he saw his faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 20 Seeing their faith, he said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
21 And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: “Who is this, who is speaking blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone?” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”
21 καὶ ἤρξαντο διαλογίζεσθαι οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι λέγοντες· τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὃς λαλεῖ βλασφημίας; τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ μόνος ὁ Θεός;
22 But when Jesus realized their thoughts, responding, he said to them: “What are you thinking in your hearts? 22 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, “Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?
22 ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
23 Which is easier to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk?’ 23 Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?
23 τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν, ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου, ἢ εἰπεῖν, ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει;
24 But so that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he said to the paralytic, “I say to you to: Rise up, take up your bed, and go into your house.” 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, arise, take up your cot, and go to your house.”
25 And at once, rising up in their sight, he took up the bed on which he was lying, and he went away to his own house, magnifying God. 25 Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that which he was laying on, and departed to his house, glorifying God.
26 And astonishment took hold of everyone, and they were magnifying God. And they were filled with fear, saying: “For we have seen miracles today.” 26 Amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God. They were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”
27 And after these things, he went out, and he saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the customs office. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 27 After these things he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow me!”
28 And leaving behind everything, rising up, he followed him. 28 He left everything, and rose up and followed him.
29 And Levi made a great feast for him in his own house. And there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others, who were sitting at table with them. 29 Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them.
30 But the Pharisees and scribes were murmuring, saying to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 30 Their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”
30 καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· διατί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;
31 And responding, Jesus said to them: “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who have maladies. 31 Jesus answered them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
32 I have not come to call the just, but sinners to repentance.” 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
33 But they said to him, “Why do the disciples of John fast frequently, and make supplications, and those of the Pharisees act similarly, while yours eat and drink?” 33 They said to him, “Why do John’s disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?”
33 Οἱ δὲ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· διατί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσι πυκνὰ καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται, ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων, οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσι καὶ πίνουσιν;
34 And he said to them: “How can you cause the sons of the groom to fast, while the groom is still with them? 34 He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?
34 ὁ δὲ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· μὴ δύνασθε τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ νυμφῶνος, ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετ᾽ αὐτῶν ἐστι, ποιῆσαι νηστεύειν;
35 But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast, in those days.” 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days.”
36 Then he also made a comparison for them: “For no one sews a patch from a new garment onto an old garment. Otherwise, he both disrupts the new one, and the patch from the new one does not join together with the old one. 36 He also told a parable to them. “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine ruptures the wineskins, and it will be poured out, and the wineskins will be lost. 37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled and the skins will be destroyed.
38 Instead, the new wine is put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.
39 And no one who is drinking the old, soon wishes for the new. For he says, ‘The old is better.’ ” 39 No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’”
