3 Сѣдѧ́щꙋ же є҆мꙋ̀ на горѣ̀ є҆леѡ́нстѣй, пристꙋпи́ша къ немꙋ̀ ᲂу҆чн҃цы̀ на є҆ди́нѣ, глаго́люще: рцы̀ на́мъ, когда̀ сїѧ̑ бꙋ́дꙋтъ; и҆ что̀ є҆́сть зна́менїе твоегѡ̀ прише́ствїѧ и҆ кончи́на вѣ́ка;
8 Y todas estas cosas, principio de dolores.
11 Y muchos falsos profetas se levantarán y engañarán á muchos.
16 Entonces los que están en Judea, huyan á los montes;
17 Y el que sobre el terrado, no descienda á tomar algo de su casa;
20 Orad, pues, que vuestra huída no sea en invierno ni en sábado;
23 Entonces, si alguno os dijere: He aquí está el Cristo, ó allí, no creáis.
25 He aquí os [lo] he dicho antes.
26 Así que, si os dijeren: He aquí en el desierto está; no salgáis: He aquí en las cámaras; no creáis.
45 Кто̀ ᲂу҆̀бо є҆́сть вѣ́рный ра́бъ и҆ мꙋ́дрый, є҆го́же поста́витъ господи́нъ є҆гѡ̀ над̾ до́момъ свои́мъ, є҆́же даѧ́ти и҆̀мъ пи́щꙋ во вре́мѧ (и҆́хъ);
49 Y comenzare á herir á sus consiervos, y aun á comer y á beber con los borrachos;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 24:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXV)

    For inasmuch as He said, "Your house is left desolate," and had previously forewarned them of many grievous things; therefore the disciples having heard these things, as though marvelling at it, came unto Him, showing the beauty of the temple, and wondering, if so much beauty was to be destroyed, and materials so costly, and variety of workmanship past utterance; …

  2. Quotes verse 24:28 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter IX)

    … My daughters from the ends of the earth; all, as many as have been called in My name: for in My glory I have prepared, and formed, and made him." Inasmuch as then, "wheresoever the carcase is, there shall also the eagles be gathered together," we do participate in the glory of the Lord, who has both formed us, and …

  3. Quotes verse 24:35 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XII–XV)
