LSV Literal Standard Version
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 BY DAVID, IN HIS CHANGING HIS BEHAVIOR BEFORE ABIMELECH, AND HE DRIVES HIM AWAY, AND HE GOES. [ALEPH-BET] I bless YHWH at all times, || His praise [is] continually in my mouth.
1 By David; when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.
2 In YHWH my soul boasts herself, || The humble hear and rejoice.
2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
3 Ascribe greatness to YHWH with me, || And we exalt His Name together.
3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let’s exalt his name together.
4 I sought YHWH, and He answered me, || And delivered me from all my fears.
4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked expectingly to Him, || And they became bright, || And their faces are not ashamed.
5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.
6 This poor [one] called, and YHWH heard, || And saved him from all his distresses.
6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 A messenger of YHWH is encamping, || Around those who fear Him, || And He arms them.
7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Taste and see that YHWH [is] good, || O the blessedness of the man who trusts in Him.
8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear YHWH, you His holy ones, || For there is no lack to those fearing Him.
9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.
10 Young lions have lacked and been hungry, || And those seeking YHWH do not lack any good,
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.
11 Come, children, listen to me, || I teach you the fear of YHWH.
11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
12 Who [is] the man that is desiring life? Loving days to see good?
12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil, || And your lips from speaking deceit.
13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.
14 Turn aside from evil and do good, || Seek peace and pursue it.
14 Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of YHWH [are] to the righteous, || And His ears to their cry.
15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.
16 (The face of YHWH [is] on doers of evil, || To cut off their memorial from earth.)
16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.
17 They cried, and YHWH heard, || And delivered them from all their distresses.
17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 YHWH [is] near to the broken of heart, || And He saves the bruised of spirit.
18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
19 Many [are] the afflictions of the righteous, || YHWH delivers him out of them all.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.
20 He is keeping all his bones, || Not one of them has been broken.
20 He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.
21 Evil puts the wicked to death, || And those hating the righteous are desolate.
21 Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.
22 YHWH redeems the soul of His servants, || And none trusting in Him are desolate!
22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
