1 Prošavši pak Amfipolj i Apoloniju dođoše u Solun, gde beše zbornica jevrejska.
6 Mas no hallándolos, trajeron á Jasón y á algunos hermanos á los gobernadores de la ciudad, dando voces: Estos que alborotan el mundo, también han venido acá;
8 I smutiše narod i starešine gradske koji ovo čuše.
9 Ali kad ih Jason i ostali zadovoljiše odgovorom, pustiše ih.
10 A braća odmah noću opraviše Pavla i Silu u Veriju.
14 A braća onda odmah otpraviše Pavla da ide u primorje; a Sila i Timotije ostaše onde.
16 A kad ih Pavle čekaše u Atini, razdraži se duh njegov u njemu gledajući grad pun idola;
22 A Pavle stavši nasred Areopaga reče: Ljudi Atinjani! Po svemu vas vidim da ste vrlo pobožni;
22 Estando pues Pablo en medio del Areópago, dijo: Varones Atenienses, en todo os veo como más supersticiosos;
23 jer prolazeći i motreći vaše svetinje nađoh oltar na kome beše napisano: Bogu nepoznatom.
25 Ni es honrado con manos de hombres, necesitado de algo; pues él da á todos vida, y respiración, y todas las cosas;
26 Y de una sangre ha hecho todo el linaje de los hombres, para que habitasen sobre toda la faz de la tierra; y [les] ha prefijado el orden de los tiempos, y los términos de la habitación de ellos;
30 Ne gledajući dakle Bog na vremena neznanja, sad zapoveda svima ljudima svuda da se pokaju;
34 A neki ljudi pristaše uza nj i verovaše; među kojima beše i Dionisije Areopagitski, i žena po imenu Damara, i drugi s njima.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 17:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles (Homily XXXVII)

    Again they haste past the small cities, and press on to the greater ones, since from those the word was to flow as from a fountain into the neighboring cities. "And Paul, as his manner was, went into the synagogue of the Jews." Although he had said, "We turn to the Gentiles" (ch. xiii.

  2. Quotes verse 17:28 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VII, Chapters VII–IX)

    And to the Athenians Thou saidst by Thy apostle, that in Thee "we live, and move, and have our being;" as one of their own poets has said. And verily these books came from thence.

  3. Quotes verse 17:6 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXIII)

    For "They," it is said, "that have turned the world upside down, are come hither also;" and again, "They preach things contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that Jesus Christ is king." And everywhere the courts of justice were preoccupied by such suspicions, and much influence from above was needed, for their showing both the truth of the doctrine …

  4. Quotes verse 17:28 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Fourth Theological Oration, Which is the Second Concerning the Son)

    For in Him we live and move and have our being, according to the double power of that Breathing into us; for we were all inspired by Him with breath, and as many of us as were capable of it, and in so far as we open the mouth of our mind, with God the Holy Ghost.

  5. Quotes verse 17:31 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapter XVI)

    … of the expected appearance of the Lord from heaven the Holy Spirit will not, as some suppose, have no functions to discharge: on the contrary, even in the day of His revelation, in which the blessed and only potentate will judge the world in righteousness, the Holy Spirit will be present with Him.
