5 Zato ljubi Gospoda Boga svog iz svega srca svog i iz sve duše svoje i iz sve snage svoje.
7 I često ih napominji sinovima svojim, i govori o njima kad sediš u kući svojoj i kad ideš putem, kad ležeš i kad ustaješ.
13 Gospoda Boga svog boj se, i Njemu služi, i Njegovim se imenom kuni.
18 Y harás lo recto y bueno en ojos de Jehová, para que te vaya bien, y entres y poseas la buena tierra que Jehová juró á tus padres;
21 Onda kaži sinu svom: Bejasmo robovi Faraonovi u Misiru, i izvede nas Gospod iz Misira rukom krepkom,
21 Entonces dirás á tu hijo: Nosotros éramos siervos de Faraón en Egipto, y Jehová nos sacó de Egipto con mano fuerte;
22 i učini Gospod znake i čudesa velika i zla u Misiru na Faraonu i na svemu domu njegovom pred nama,
22 Y dió Jehová señales y milagros grandes y nocivos en Egipto, sobre Faraón y sobre toda su casa, delante de nuestros ojos;
23 Y sacónos de allá, para traernos y darnos la tierra que juró á nuestros padres;
25 I biće nam pravda, ako uzdržimo i ustvorimo sve zapovesti ove pred Gospodom Bogom svojim kako nam je zapovedio.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 6:4 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

    … god at all); or shall it be (what is really the case) the Maker of heaven and earth, whom also the prophets proclaimed,--whom Christ, too, confesses as His Father,-- whom also the law announces, saying: "Hear, O Israel; The Lord thy God is one God?"

  2. Quotes verse 6:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book III, Chapters VIII–XI)

    Can it at any time or place be an unrighteous thing for a man to love God with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his mind, and his neighbour as himself? Therefore those offences which be contrary to nature are everywhere and at all times to be held in detestation and punished; such were those of …

  3. Quotes verse 6:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXII)

    Since they were continually forgetting God's benefits, He commanded His marvellous works to be inscribed on little tablets, and that these should be suspended from their hands (wherefore also He said, "They shall be immoveable in thine eyes"), which they called phylacteries; as many of our women now wear Gospels hung from their necks.

  5. Quotes verse 6:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Chapter XIX)

    The Lord therefore confuted him out of the law, when He said, "It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God;" pointing out by the word contained in the law that which is the duty of man, that he should not tempt God; and in regard to Himself, since He appeared in human form, [declaring] that He …
