1 Tada odgovori Gospod Jovu iz vihora i reče:
1 Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
2 “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
4 Gde si ti bio kad ja osnivah zemlju? Kaži, ako si razuman.
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
5 Ko joj je odredio mere? Znaš li? Ili ko je rastegao uže preko nje?
5 Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
6 Na čem su podnožja njena uglavljena? Ili ko joj je metnuo kamen ugaoni?
6 What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 Kad pevahu zajedno zvezde jutarnje i svi sinovi Božji klikovahu.
7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
9 Kad ga odeh oblakom i povih tamom;
9 when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 Kad postavih za nj uredbu svoju i metnuh mu prevornice i vrata;
10 marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
11 I rekoh: Dovde ćeš dolaziti, a dalje nećeš, i tu će se ustavljati ponositi valovi tvoji.
11 and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
12 Jesi li svog veka zapovedio jutru, pokazao zori mesto njeno,
12 “Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
13 that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
14 It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
15 From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
16 Jesi li dolazio do dubina morskih? I po dnu propasti jesi li hodio?
16 “Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Jesu li ti se otvorila vrata smrtna, i vrata sena smrtnog jesi li video?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Jesi li sagledao širinu zemaljsku? Kaži, ako znaš sve to.
18 Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
19 Koji je put k stanu svetlosti? I gde je mesto tami,
19 “What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
20 that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
21 Znaš ti; jer si se onda rodio, i broj je dana tvojih velik.
21 Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
22 Jesi li ulazio u riznice snežne? Ili riznice gradne jesi li video,
22 Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 Ko je razdelio jazove povodnju i put svetlici gromovnoj?
25 Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
26 to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
27 Da napoji pusta i nerodna mesta, i učini da raste trava zelena.
27 to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
28 Ima li dažd oca? Ili ko je rodio kaplje rosne?
28 Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
29 Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
30 The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
31 Možeš li svezati miline vlašićima? Ili svezu štapima razrešiti?
31 “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
32 Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
33 Znaš li red nebeski? Možeš li ti uređivati vladu njegovu na zemlji?
33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
34 “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
35 Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Ko je metnuo čoveku u srce mudrost? Ili ko je dao duši razum?
36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
37 Ko će izbrojati oblake mudrošću, i mehove nebeske ko će izliti,
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
38 when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
39 “Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40 kada se kriju u svojim jazbinama, i vrebaju u šipražju?
40 when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
41 Ko obezbeđuje gavranu plen njegov, kada njegovi mladi vapiju Bogu, i lutaju zbog nedostatka hrane?
41 Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 38:28 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

Who is the father of the rain? And who hath begotten the drops of dew?

  2. Quotes verse 38:1 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The First Theological Oration)

And yet, O talkative Dialectician, I will ask thee one small question, and answer thou me, as He saith to Job, Who through whirlwind and cloud giveth Divine admonitions. Are there many mansions in God's House, as thou hast heard, or only one?

  3. Quotes verse 38:6 Basil of Caesarea, Hexaemeron (Homily I)

Put then a limit to your thought, so that your curiosity in investigating the incomprehensible may not incur the reproaches of Job, and you be not asked by him, "Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened?" If ever you hear in the Psalms, "I bear up the pillars of it;" see in these pillars the power which sustains it.

  4. Quotes verse 38:37 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

… condensed the air into clouds, and bade them carry the waters of the rain, now bringing golden-tinted clouds from the north, now changing these into one uniform appearance, and again transforming them into manifold circles and other shapes? Who can number the clouds in wisdom?
