1 I ustavši njih sve mnoštvo, odvedoše Ga k Pilatu.
2 I počeše Ga tužiti govoreći: Ovog nađosmo da otpađuje narod naš, i zabranjuje davati ćesaru danak, i govori da je on Hristos car.
3 A Pilat Ga zapita: Ti li si car judejski? A On odgovarajući reče mu: Ti kažeš.
5 A oni navaljivahu govoreći: On buni ljude učeći po svoj Judeji počevši od Galileje dovde.
6 A Pilat čuvši za Galileju zapita: Zar je on Galilejac?
10 A glavari sveštenički i književnici stajahu, i jednako tužahu Ga.
11 A Irod osramotivši Ga sa svojim vojnicima, i narugavši Mu se, obuče Mu belu haljinu, i posla Ga natrag Pilatu.
13 A Pilat sazvavši glavare svešteničke i knezove i narod
14 reče im: Dovedoste mi ovog čoveka kao koji narod otpađuje, i eto ja ga pred vama ispitah, i ne nalazim na ovom čoveku nijednu krivicu što vi na njega govorite;
18 Ali narod sav povika govoreći: Uzmi ovog, a pusti nam Varavu;
20 A Pilat opet reče da bi on hteo pustiti Isusa.
20 Y hablóles otra vez Pilato, queriendo soltar á Jesús.
21 A oni vikahu govoreći: Raspni ga, raspni.
22 A on im treći put reče: Kakvo je dakle on zlo učinio?
24 Entonces Pilato juzgó que se hiciese lo que ellos pedían;
32 Vođahu pak i druga dva zločinca da pogube s Njim.
34 A Isus govoraše: Oče! Oprosti im; jer ne znadu šta čine. A deleći Njegove haljine bacahu kocke.
36 A i vojnici Mu se rugahu, i pristupahu k Njemu i davahu Mu ocat,
37 i govorahu: Ako si ti car judejski pomozi sam sebi.
38 A beše nad Njim i natpis napisan slovima grčkim i latinskim i jevrejskim: Ovo je car judejski.
42 I reče Isusu: Opomeni me se, Gospode, kad dođeš u carstvo svoje.
45 I pomrča sunce, i zaves crkveni razdre se napola.
46 I povikavši Isus glasno reče: Oče! U ruke Tvoje predajem duh svoj. I rekavši ovo izdahnu.
50 I gle, čovek, po imenu Josif, savetnik, čovek dobar i pravedan,
51 (El cual no había consentido en el consejo ni en los hechos de ellos), de Arimatea, ciudad de la Judea, el cual también esperaba el reino de Dios;
52 on pristupivši k Pilatu zaiska telo Isusovo.
53 I skide Ga, i obavi platnom, i metnu Ga u grob isečen, u kome niko ne beše nikad metnut.
54 I dan beše petak, i subota osvitaše.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 23:34 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVII)

And from this fact, that He exclaimed upon the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do," the long-suffering, patience, compassion, and goodness of Christ are exhibited, since He both suffered, and did Himself exculpate those who had maltreated Him.

  2. Quotes verse 23:34 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVIII, Chapters 30–32)

… be mindful of mercy." What is this but that He puts Himself for the Jews, of whose nation He was, who were troubled with great anger and crucified Christ, when He, mindful of mercy, said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do? "God shall come from Teman, and the Holy One from the shady and close mountain." …

  3. Quotes verse 23:40 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIII)

… judge others, when one is chargeable with the same things." And why marvel at His establishing this law, when even the very thief knew it upon the cross, saying to the other thief, "Dost not thou fear God, seeing we are in the same condemnation;" expressing the same sentiments with Christ?

  4. Quotes verse 23:41 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XIII)

There is yet another witness of the sinlessness of Jesus,--the robber, the first man admitted into Paradise; who rebuked his fellow, and said, "We receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss; for we were present, both thou and I, at His judgment."

  5. Quotes verse 23:34 Augustine of Hippo, Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount (Book I, Chapters XXI–XXII)

And on this account our Lord also on the cross says, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do:" for, not yet having become partakers of the grace of the Holy Spirit, they had not yet entered the fellowship of the holy brotherhood.
