1 Aliluja. Hvalite ime Gospodnje, hvalite, sluge Gospodnje,
1 Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh’s name! Praise him, you servants of Yahweh,
2 Koji stojite u domu Gospodnjem; u dvorima doma Boga našeg.
2 you who stand in Yahweh’s house, in the courts of our God’s house.
3 Hvalite Gospoda, jer je dobar Gospod; pojte imenu Njegovom, jer je slatko.
3 Praise Yah, for Yahweh is good. Sing praises to his name, for that is pleasant.
4 Jer Jakova izabra sebi Gospod, Izrailja za dostojanje svoje.
4 For Yah has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession.
5 Jer poznah da je velik Gospod, i Gospod naš svrh svih bogova.
5 For I know that Yahweh is great, that our Lord is above all gods.
6 Šta god hoće, sve Gospod čini, na nebesima i na zemlji, u morima i u svim bezdanima.
6 Whatever Yahweh pleased, that he has done, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
7 Izvodi oblake od kraja zemlje, munje čini usred dažda, izvodi vetar iz staja njegovih.
7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings with the rain. He brings the wind out of his treasuries.
8 On pobi prvence u Misiru od čoveka do živinčeta.
8 He struck the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and animal.
9 Pokaza znake i čudesa usred tebe, Misire, na Faraonu i na svim slugama njegovim.
9 He sent signs and wonders into the middle of you, Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his servants.
10 Pobi narode velike, i izgubi careve jake:
10 He struck many nations, and killed mighty kings—
11 Siona, cara amorejskog i Oga, cara vasanskog, i sva carstva hananska;
11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 I dade zemlju njihovu u dostojanje, u dostojanje Izrailju, narodu svom.
12 and gave their land for a heritage, a heritage to Israel, his people.
13 Gospode! Ime je Tvoje večno; Gospode! Spomen je Tvoj od kolena do kolena.
13 Your name, Yahweh, endures forever; your renown, Yahweh, throughout all generations.
14 Jer će suditi Gospod narodu svom, i na sluge svoje smilovaće se.
14 For Yahweh will judge his people and have compassion on his servants.
15 Idoli su neznabožački srebro i zlato, delo ruku čovečijih;
15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
16 Usta imaju, a ne govore; oči imaju, a ne vide;
16 They have mouths, but they can’t speak. They have eyes, but they can’t see.
17 Uši imaju, a ne čuju; niti ima dihanja u ustima njihovim.
17 They have ears, but they can’t hear, neither is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Kakvi su oni onakvi su i oni koji ih grade, i svi koji se uzdaju u njih.
18 Those who make them will be like them, yes, everyone who trusts in them.
19 Dome Izrailjev, blagosiljaj Gospoda; dome Aronov, blagosiljaj Gospoda;
19 House of Israel, praise Yahweh! House of Aaron, praise Yahweh!
20 Dome Levijev, blagosiljaj Gospoda; koji se bojite Gospoda, blagosiljajte Gospoda.
20 House of Levi, praise Yahweh! You who fear Yahweh, praise Yahweh!
21 Blagosloven Gospod na Sionu, koji živi u Jerusalimu! Aliluja!
21 Blessed be Yahweh from Zion, who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXIV)

    (ver. 1), "who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God" (ver. 2). Why has he added, "in the courts"? Courts mean the wider spaces of a house. He who stands in the courts is not straitened, is not confined, in some fashion is enlarged.

  2. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

    Lo, the whole world crieth out in the Church of God, "I know that the Lord is great." Yet doubtless there are but few who are saved.

  3. Quotes verse 135:7 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

    For so many measures of waters lie upon the clouds, yet they are not rent: but come down with all good order upon the earth. Who bringeth the winds out of their treasuries?

  4. Quotes verse 135:6 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book II, Chapters XXVI–XXIX)

    For whatsoever the Lord pleased that did He in heaven and in earth, and no one resisted His will.

  5. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

    … with how great assurance will the purified mass, standing at the Right Hand, fearing now for itself the admixture of no evil men, nor the loss of any of the good, now about to reign with Christ, say, "I know that the Lord is great"!
