VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Alleluja. [Laudate nomen Domini; laudate, servi, Dominum:
135:1 Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh’s name! Praise him, you servants of Yahweh,
2 qui statis in domo Domini, in atriis domus Dei nostri.
135:2 you who stand in Yahweh’s house, in the courts of our God’s house.
3 Laudate Dominum, quia bonus Dominus; psallite nomini ejus, quoniam suave.
135:3 Praise Yah, for Yahweh is good. Sing praises to his name, for that is pleasant.
4 Quoniam Jacob elegit sibi Dominus; Israël in possessionem sibi.
135:4 For Yah has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession.
135:5 For I know that Yahweh is great, that our Lord is above all gods.
6 Omnia quæcumque voluit Dominus fecit, in cælo, in terra, in mari et in omnibus abyssis.
135:6 Whatever Yahweh pleased, that he has done, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
135:7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings with the rain. He brings the wind out of his treasuries.
135:8 He struck the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and animal.
9 Et misit signa et prodigia in medio tui, Ægypte: in Pharaonem, et in omnes servos ejus.
135:9 He sent signs and wonders into the middle of you, Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his servants.
135:10 He struck many nations, and killed mighty kings—
11 Sehon, regem Amorrhæorum, et Og, regem Basan, et omnia regna Chanaan:
135:11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 et dedit terram eorum hæreditatem, hæreditatem Israël populo suo.
135:12 and gave their land for a heritage, a heritage to Israel, his people.
13 Domine, nomen tuum in æternum; Domine, memoriale tuum in generationem et generationem.
135:13 Your name, Yahweh, endures forever; your renown, Yahweh, throughout all generations.
14 Quia judicabit Dominus populum suum, et in servis suis deprecabitur.
135:14 For Yahweh will judge his people and have compassion on his servants.
15 Simulacra gentium argentum et aurum, opera manuum hominum.
135:15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
135:16 They have mouths, but they can’t speak. They have eyes, but they can’t see.
135:17 They have ears, but they can’t hear, neither is there any breath in their mouths.
135:18 Those who make them will be like them, yes, everyone who trusts in them.
19 Domus Israël, benedicite Domino; domus Aaron, benedicite Domino.
135:19 House of Israel, praise Yahweh! House of Aaron, praise Yahweh!
20 Domus Levi, benedicite Domino; qui timetis Dominum, benedicite Domino.
135:20 House of Levi, praise Yahweh! You who fear Yahweh, praise Yahweh!
135:21 Blessed be Yahweh from Zion, who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 135.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXIV)

(ver. 1), "who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God" (ver. 2). Why has he added, "in the courts"? Courts mean the wider spaces of a house. He who stands in the courts is not straitened, is not confined, in some fashion is enlarged.

  2. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

Lo, the whole world crieth out in the Church of God, "I know that the Lord is great." Yet doubtless there are but few who are saved.

  3. Quotes verse 135:7 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

For so many measures of waters lie upon the clouds, yet they are not rent: but come down with all good order upon the earth. Who bringeth the winds out of their treasuries?

  4. Quotes verse 135:6 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book II, Chapters XXVI–XXIX)

For whatsoever the Lord pleased that did He in heaven and in earth, and no one resisted His will.

  5. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

… with how great assurance will the purified mass, standing at the Right Hand, fearing now for itself the admixture of no evil men, nor the loss of any of the good, now about to reign with Christ, say, "I know that the Lord is great"!
