VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
4 Et dum seminat, quædam ceciderunt secus viam, et venerunt volucres cæli, et comederunt ea.
8 Alia autem ceciderunt in terram bonam: et dabant fructum, aliud centesimum, aliud sexagesimum, aliud trigesimum.
9 Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
10 Et accedentes discipuli dixerunt ei: Quare in parabolis loqueris eis?
10 Καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ· διατί ἐν παραβολαῖς λαλεῖς αὐτοῖς;
18 Vos ergo audite parabolam seminantis.
24 Aliam parabolam proposuit illis, dicens: Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini, qui seminavit bonum semen in agro suo:
27 Accedentes autem servi patrisfamilias, dixerunt ei: Domine, nonne bonum semen seminasti in agro tuo? unde ergo habet zizania?
27 προσελθόντες δὲ οἱ δοῦλοι τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου εἶπον αὐτῷ· κύριε, οὐχὶ καλὸν σπέρμα ἔσπειρας ἐν τῷ [σῷ] ἀγρῷ; πόθεν οὖν ἔχει ζιζάνια;
28 ὁ δὲ ἔφη αὐτοῖς· ἐχθρὸς ἄνθρωπος τοῦτο ἐποίησεν. οἱ δὲ δοῦλοι εἶπον αὐτῷ· θέλεις οὖν ἀπελθόντες συλλέξωμεν αὐτά;
31 Aliam parabolam proposuit eis dicens: Simile est regnum cælorum grano sinapis, quod accipiens homo seminavit in agro suo:
36 Tunc, dimissis turbis, venit in domum: et accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes: Edissere nobis parabolam zizaniorum agri.
38 Ager autem est mundus. Bonum vero semen, hi sunt filii regnum. Zizania autem, filii sunt nequam.
39 Inimicus autem, qui seminavit ea, est diabolus. Messis vero, consummatio sæculi est. Messores autem, angeli sunt.
40 Sicut ergo colliguntur zizania, et igni comburuntur: sic erit in consummatione sæculi.
42 et mittent eos in caminum ignis. Ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
43 Tunc justi fulgebunt sicut sol in regno Patris eorum. Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
45 Iterum simile est regnum cælorum homini negotiatori, quærenti bonas margaritas.
49 Sic erit in consummatione sæculi: exibunt angeli, et separabunt malos de medio justorum,
50 et mittent eos in caminum ignis: ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
51 Intellexistis hæc omnia? Dicunt ei: Etiam.
54 καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν πατρίδα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν, ὥστε ἐκπλήττεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ λέγειν· πόθεν τούτῳ ἡ σοφία αὕτη καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις;
55 οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τοῦ τέκτονος υἱός; οὐχὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ λέγεται Μαριὰμ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωσῆς καὶ Σίμων καὶ Ἰούδας;
56 καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ πᾶσαι πρὸς ἡμᾶς εἰσι; πόθεν οὖν τούτῳ ταῦτα πάντα;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

And, as to this assertion not being conjecture, Mark hath expressed it more distinctly, by saying, that "they came to Him privately." …

  3. Quotes verse 13:42 Justin Martyr, First Apology (Chapters XIII–XVI)

And every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire." And as to those who are not living pursuant to these His teachings, and are Christians only in name, we demand that all such be punished by you.

  4. Quotes verse 13:43 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapters XXXI–XXXII)

… no such thing as good and evil, but certain things were deemed righteous, and certain others unrighteous, in human opinion only, He never would have expressed Himself thus in His teaching: "The righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father;" but He shall send the unrighteous, and those who do not the works of righteousness, …

  5. Quotes verse 13:46 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VIII)

For Thou hast said unto man, "Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;" and desire not to seem wise, because, "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." But I had now found the goodly pearl, which, selling all that I had, I ought to have bought; and I hesitated.
