VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 In finem. In hymnis David.
·
2 [Exaudi, Deus, deprecationem meam; intende orationi meæ.
61:1 For the Chief Musician. For a stringed instrument. By David. Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer.
3 A finibus terræ ad te clamavi, dum anxiaretur cor meum; in petra exaltasti me. Deduxisti me,
61:2 From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
4 quia factus es spes mea: turris fortitudinis a facie inimici.
61:3 For you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy.
5 Inhabitabo in tabernaculo tuo in sæcula; protegar in velamento alarum tuarum.
61:4 I will dwell in your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah.
6 Quoniam tu, Deus meus, exaudisti orationem meam; dedisti hæreditatem timentibus nomen tuum.
61:5 For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
7 Dies super dies regis adjicies; annos ejus usque in diem generationis et generationis.
61:6 You will prolong the king’s life. His years will be for generations.
8 Permanet in æternum in conspectu Dei: misericordiam et veritatem ejus quis requiret?
61:7 He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever. Appoint your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.
9 Sic psalmum dicam nomini tuo in sæculum sæculi, ut reddam vota mea de die in diem.]
61:8 So I will sing praise to your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 61.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LX)

David the king was one man, but not one man he figured; sometimes to wit he figured the Church of many men consisting, extended even unto the ends of the earth: but sometimes One Man he figured, Him he figured that is Mediator of God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
