1 For the end, concerning the morning aid, a Psalm of David.
·
2 O God, my God, attend to me: why hast thou forsaken me? the account of my transgressions is far from my salvation.
22:1 For the Chief Musician; set to “The Doe of the Morning.” A Psalm by David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
3 O my God, I will cry to thee by day, but thou wilt not hear: and by night, and [it shall] not [be accounted] for folly to me.
22:2 My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer; in the night season, and am not silent.
4 But thou, the praise of Israel, dwellest in a sanctuary.
22:3 But you are holy, you who inhabit the praises of Israel.
5 Our fathers hoped in thee; they hoped, and thou didst deliver them.
22:4 Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them.
6 They cried to thee, and were saved: they hoped in thee, and were not ashamed.
22:5 They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed.
7 But I am a worm, and not a man; a reproach of men, and scorn of the people.
22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people.
8 All that saw me mocked me: they spoke with [their] lips, they shook the head, [saying],
22:7 All those who see me mock me. They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,
9 He hoped in the Lord: let him deliver him, let him save him, because he takes pleasure in him.
22:8 “He trusts in Yahweh. Let him deliver him. Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.”
10 For thou art he that drew me out of the womb; my hope from my mother's breasts.
22:9 But you brought me out of the womb. You made me trust while at my mother’s breasts.
11 I was cast on thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
22:10 I was thrown on you from my mother’s womb. You are my God since my mother bore me.
12 Stand not aloof from me; for affliction is near; for there is no helper.
22:11 Don’t be far from me, for trouble is near. For there is no one to help.
13 Many bullocks have compassed me: fat bulls have beset me round.
22:12 Many bulls have surrounded me. Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
14 They have opened their mouth against me, as a ravening and roaring lion.
22:13 They open their mouths wide against me, lions tearing prey and roaring.
15 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are loosened: my heart in the midst of my belly is become like melting wax.
22:14 I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax. It is melted within me.
16 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue is glued to my throat; and thou hast brought me down to the dust of death.
22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have brought me into the dust of death.
17◆ For many dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked doers has beset me round: they pierced my hands and my feet.
22:16 For dogs have surrounded me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me. They have pierced my hands and feet.
18 They counted all my bones; and they observed and looked upon me.
22:17 I can count all of my bones. They look and stare at me.
19 They parted my garments [among] themselves, and cast lots upon my raiment.
22:18 They divide my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.
20 But thou, O Lord, remove not my help afar off: be ready for mine aid.
22:19 But don’t be far off, Yahweh. You are my help. Hurry to help me!
21 Deliver my soul from the sword; my only-begotten one from the power of the dog.
22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog.
22 Save me from the lion's mouth; and [regard] my lowliness from the horns of the unicorns.
22:21 Save me from the lion’s mouth! Yes, you have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.
23 I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I sing praise to thee.
22:22 I will declare your name to my brothers. Among the assembly, I will praise you.
24 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye seed of Jacob, glorify him: let all the seed of Israel fear him.
22:23 You who fear Yahweh, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him! Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel!
25 For he has not despised nor been angry at the supplication of the poor; nor turned away his face from me; but when I cried to him, he heard me.
22:24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, neither has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard.
26 My praise is of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
22:25 My praise of you comes in the great assembly. I will pay my vows before those who fear him.
27 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: their heart shall live for ever.
22:26 The humble shall eat and be satisfied. They shall praise Yahweh who seek after him. Let your hearts live forever.
28 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before him.
22:27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to Yahweh. All the relatives of the nations shall worship before you.
29 For the kingdom is the Lord's; and he is the governor of the nations.
22:28 For the kingdom is Yahweh’s. He is the ruler over the nations.
30 All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and worshipped: all that go down to the earth shall fall down before him: my soul also lives to him.
22:29 All the rich ones of the earth shall eat and worship. All those who go down to the dust shall bow before him, even he who can’t keep his soul alive.
31 And my seed shall serve him: the generation that is coming shall be reported to the Lord.
22:30 Posterity shall serve him. Future generations shall be told about the Lord.
32 And they shall report his righteousness to the people that shall be born, whom the Lord has made.
22:31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, for he has done it.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 22.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
