90:1 A Prayer by Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
90:2 Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
90:3 You turn man to destruction, saying, “Return, you children of men.”
90:4 For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.
90:5 You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass.
90:6 In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry.
90:7 For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath.
90:8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
90:9 For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
90:10 The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
11 Кто̀ вѣ́сть держа́вꙋ гнѣ́ва твоегѡ̀, и҆ ѿ стра́ха твоегѡ̀ ꙗ҆́рость твою̀ и҆счестѝ;
90:11 Who knows the power of your anger, your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
90:12 So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
90:13 Relent, Yahweh! How long? Have compassion on your servants!
90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
90:15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
90:16 Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children.
90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 90.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXIX)

Understand, beloved, this Psalm, which I am about to explain, by the grace of God, of our hope in the Lord Jesus Christ, and be of good cheer, because He who promised, will fulfil all, as He has fulfilled much: for it is not our own merit, but His mercy, that gives us confidence in Him.

… Abraham lived 175 of, and after him his son Isaac 180, and his son Jacob nearly 150, and some time after, Moses 120, and men now seventy or eighty, or not much longer, of which years it is said, "their strength is labor and sorrow." But that discrepancy of numbers which is found to exist between our own and the …

  3. Quotes verse 90:4 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapters XIII–XIII)

Or if even this is so (for time flies, and a thousand years are in God's sight as one day, or as a watch in the night,) yet we cannot believe that He intended any such meaning on this occasion, especially as He went on to say, "Ye shall seek me, and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I …
