1 ἘΠΙ ΤΟΥΣ ἈΛΛΟΦΥΛΟΥΣ ΤΑΔΕ ΛΕΓΕΙ ΚΥΡΙΟΣ. 2 Ἰδοὺ ὕδατα ἀναβαίνει ἀπὸ Βοῤῥᾶ, καὶ ἔσται εἰς χειμάῤῥουν κατακλύζοντα, καὶ κατακλύσει γῆν καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς, πόλιν καὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν αὐτῇ· καὶ κεκράξονται οἱ ἄνθρωποι, καὶ ἀλαλάξουσιν ἅπαντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν, 3 ἀπὸ φωνῆς ὁρμῆς αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ τῶν ὅπλων τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ σεισμοῦ τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτοῦ, ἤχου τροχῶν αὐτοῦ· οὐκ ἐπέστρεψαν πατέρες ἐφʼ υἱοὺς αὐτῶν ἀπὸ ἐκλύσεως χειρῶν αὐτῶν 4 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἐπερχομένῃ τοῦ ἀπολέσαι πάντας τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους· καὶ ἀφανιῶ τὴν Τύρον, καὶ τὴν Σιδῶνα, καὶ πάντας τοὺς καταλοίπους τῆς βοηθείας αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἐξολοθρεύσει Κύριος τοὺς καταλοίπους τῶν νήσων. 5 Ἥκει φαλάκρωμα ἐπὶ Γάζαν, ἀπεῤῥίφη Ἀσκάλων, καὶ οἱ κατάλοιποι Ἐνακίμ. 6 Ἕως τίνος κόψεις ἡ μάχαιρα τοῦ Κυρίου; ἕως τίνος οὐχ ἡσυχάσεις; ἀποκατάστηθι εἰς τὸν κολεόν σου, ἀνάπαυσαι, καὶ ἐπάρθητι. 7 Πῶς ἡσυχάσει, καὶ Κύριος ἐνετείλατο αὐτῇ ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀσκάλωνα, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς παραθαλασσίους, ἐπὶ τὰς καταλοίπους ἐπεγερθῆναι;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 29:7 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIX, Chapters 24–27)

    … when predicting the captivity that was to befall the ancient people of God, and giving them the divine command to go obediently to Babylonia, and thus serve their God, counselled them also to pray for Babylonia, saying, "In the peace thereof shall ye have peace," --the temporal peace which the good and the wicked together enjoy.
