PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 A za čase i vremena, braćo, nije vam potrebno pisati;
5 Jer ste vi svi sinovi videla i sinovi dana: nismo noći niti tame.
8 Ali mi koji smo sinovi dana da budemo trezni i obučeni u oklop vere i ljubavi, i s kacigom nade spasenja;
13 i imajte ih u izobilnoj ljubavi za delo njihovo. Budite mirni među sobom.
14 Molimo vas pak, braćo, poučavajte neuredne, utešavajte malodušne, branite slabe, snosite svakog.
15 Gledajte da niko ne vraća kome zla za zlo;
17 Radujte se svagda.
19 Duha ne gasite. Proroštva ne prezirite.
20 A sve kušajući dobro držite.
21 Uklanjajte se od svakog zla.
22 A sam Bog mira da posveti vas cele u svačemu.
25 Braćo! Molite se Bogu za nas.
26 Pozdravite braću svu celivom svetim.
27 Zaklinjem vas Gospodom da pročitate ovu poslanicu pred svom braćom svetom.
28 Blagodat Gospoda našeg Isusa Hrista s vama. Amin.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 5:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Thessalonians (Homily IX)

Nothing, as it seems, is so curious, and so fondly prone to pry into things obscure and concealed, as the nature of men. And this is wont to happen to it, when the mind is unsettled and in an imperfect state.

  2. Quotes verse 5:22 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (Chapters VIII–XIV)

I exhort you, therefore, that ye abstain from covetousness, and that ye be chaste and truthful. "Abstain from every form of evil." For if a man cannot govern himself in such matters, how shall he enjoin them on others?

  3. Quotes verse 5:23 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Preface)

… as well as a spiritual man; saying thus in the first Epistle to the Thessalonians, "Now the God of peace sanctify you perfect (perfectos); and may your spirit, and soul, and body be preserved whole without complaint to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ." Now what was his object in praying that these three--that is, soul, body, and spirit--might …

  4. Quotes verse 5:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XII–XV)

… this pilgrimage received "an earnest" that we should now be light, whilst as yet we "are saved by hope," and are the children of light, and the children of the day,--not the children of the night nor of the darkness, which yet we have been. Betwixt whom and us, in this as yet uncertain state of human knowledge, Thou only …

  5. Quotes verse 5:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXVII)

For Paul too saith this, writing on this wise, "When they shall speak of peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them;" and to show how unexpected, He said, "as travail upon a woman with child." How then doth He say, "after the tribulation of those days?" For if there be luxury then, and peace, and safety, as Paul …
