3 ostavi Judeju, i otide opet u Galileju.
13 Odgovori Isus i reče joj: Svaki koji pije od ove vode opet će ožedneti;
13 Respondió Jesús y díjole: Cualquiera que bebiere de esta agua, volverá á tener sed;
16 Reče joj Isus: Idi zovni muža svog, i dođi ovamo.
16 Jesús le dice: Ve, llama á tu marido, y ven acá.
17 Odgovori žena i reče Mu: Nemam muža. Reče joj Isus: Dobro si kazala: Nemam muža;
17 Respondió la mujer, y dijo: No tengo marido. Dícele Jesús: Bien has dicho, No tengo marido;
18 jer si pet muževa imala, i sad koga imaš nije ti muž; to si pravo kazala.
28 A žena ostavi sudove svoje i otide u grad i reče ljudima:
30 Iziđoše, dakle, iz grada i pođoše k Njemu.
31 A učenici Njegovi moljahu Ga, međutim, govoreći: Ravi! Jedi.
32 A On im reče: Ja imam jelo da jedem za koje vi ne znate.
34 A On im reče: Jelo je moje da izvršim volju Onog koji me je poslao, i da svršim Njegov posao.
36 I koji žnje prima platu, i sabira rod za život večni, da se raduju zajedno i koji seje i koji žnje;
41 I mnogo ih više verova za Njegovu besedu.
43 A posle dva dana iziđe odande, i otide u Galileju:
46 Dođe pak Isus opet u Kanu galilejsku, gde pretvori vodu u vino. I beše neki carev čovek čiji sin bolovaše u Kapernaumu.
48 I reče mu Isus: Ako ne vidite znaka i čudesa, ne verujete.
I verova čovek reči koju mu reče Isus, i pođe.
51 I odmah kad on silažaše, gle, sretoše ga sluge njegove i javiše mu govoreći: Sin je tvoj zdrav.
I verova on i sva kuća njegova.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter IV — 1-42)

It is nothing new to your ears, beloved, that the Evangelist John, like an eagle, takes a loftier flight, and soars above the dark mist of earth, to gaze with steadier eyes upon the light of truth.

  2. Commentary 4:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily XXXII)

Scripture calls the grace of the Spirit sometimes "Fire," sometimes "Water," showing that these names are not descriptive of its essence, but of its operation; for the Spirit, being Invisible and Simple, cannot be made up of different substances. Now the one John declares, speaking thus, "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with Fire" ( Matt. iii.

  3. Quotes verse 4:50 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XXI)

Then, again, withdrawing Himself [from Judæa], He is found in Samaria; on which occasion, too, He conversed with the Samaritan woman, and while at a distance, cured the son of the centurion by a word, saying, "Go thy way, thy son liveth." Afterwards He went up, the second time, to observe the festival day of the passover in Jerusalem; on …

  4. Quotes verse 4:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VI)

… out more frequent prayers and tears, that Thou wouldest hasten Thy aid, and enlighten my darkness; and she hurried all the more assiduously to the church, and hung upon the words of Ambrose, praying for the fountain of water that springeth up into everlasting life. For she loved that man as an angel of God, because she knew that it …

  5. Quotes verse 4:49 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXVI)

He, for example, who is set down in John, is for dragging Him unto his house, and saith, "Come down, for my child is ready to die." But not so this man; rather he is far superior both to him, and to those who let down the bed through the roof.
