Notes on this text (1)
Tyndale Tyndale New Testament (1534)
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Stond fast therfore in the libertie wher with Christ hath made vs fre and wrappe not youre selves agayne in the yoke of bondage.
1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
2 Beholde I Paul saye vnto you that yf ye be circumcised Christ shall proffit you nothinge at all.
2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.
3 I testifie agayne to every man which is circumcised that he is bounde to kepe the whole lawe.
3 Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 Ye are gone quyte from Christ as many as are iustified by the lawe and are fallen from grace.
4 You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.
5 We loke for and hope in the sprite to be iustified thorow fayth.
5 For we through the Spirit, by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.
6 For in Iesu Christ nether is circumcision enythinge worth nether yet vncircomcision but faith which by love is mighty in operacion.
6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision amounts to anything, but faith working through love.
7 Ye did runne well: who was a let vnto you that ye shuld not obey the trueth?
7 You were running well! Who interfered with you that you should not obey the truth?
8 Even that counsell that is not of him that called you.
8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
9 A lytell leven doth leven the whole lompe of dowe.
9 A little yeast grows through the whole lump.
10 I have trust towarde you in the Lorde that ye wyll be none other wyse mynded. He that troubleth you shall beare his iudgement what soever he be.
10 I have confidence toward you in the Lord that you will think no other way. But he who troubles you will bear his judgment, whoever he is.
11 Brethren yf I yet preache circucision: why do I then yet suffre persecucion? For then had the offence which the crosse geveth ceased.
11 But I, brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been removed.
12 I wolde to God they were seperated from you which trouble you.
12 I wish that those who disturb you would cut themselves off.
13 Brethren ye were called in to (libertie) only let not youre libertie be an occasion vnto the flesshe but in love serve one another.
13 For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.
14 For all the lawe is fulfilled in one worde which is this: thou shalt love thyne neghbour as thy selfe.
14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
15 Yf ye byte and devoure one another: take hede lest ye be consumed one of another.
15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don’t consume one another.
16 I saye walke in the sprete and fulfill not the lustes of the flesshe.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesshe lusteth contrary to the sprete and the sprete cotrary to the flesshe. These are contrary one to the other so that ye cannot do that which ye wolde.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.
18 But and yf ye be ledde of the sprete then are ye not vnder the lawe.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The dedes of the flesshe are manyfest whiche are these advoutrie fornicacion vnclenes wantannes
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness,
20 ydolatrye witchecraft hatred variaunce zele wrath stryfe sedicion sectes
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,
21 envyinge murther dronkenes glottony and soche lyke: of the which I tell you before as I have tolde you in tyme past that they which comit soche thinges shall not inherite the kyngdome of God.
21 envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom.
22 But the frute of sprete is loue ioye peace longesufferinge gentlenes goodnes faythfulnes
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
23 meknes temperancye. Agaynst suche ther is no lawe.
23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 They ye are Christis have crucified the flesshe with the appetites and lustes
24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
25 Yf we lyve in the sprete let vs walke in the sprete.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.
26 Let vs not be vayne glorious provokinge one another and envyinge one another.
26 Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

As, therefore, he who has gone forward to the better things, and has brought forth …
