1 I love Yahweh because he hears my voice and my pleas for mercy. 2 Because he listened to me, I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The cords of death surrounded me, and the snares of Sheol confronted me; I felt anguish and sorrow. 4 Then I called on the name of Yahweh: “Please Yahweh, rescue my life.” 5 Yahweh is merciful and fair; our God is compassionate. 6 Yahweh protects the naive; I was brought low, and he saved me. 7 My soul can return to its resting place, for Yahweh has been good to me. 8 For you rescued my life from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. 9 I will serve Yahweh in the land of the living. 10 I believed in him, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.” 11 In my confusion I said, “All men are liars.” 12 How can I repay Yahweh for all his kindnesses to me? 13 I will raise the cup of salvation, and call on the name of Yahweh. 14 I will fulfill my vows to Yahweh in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the sight of Yahweh is the death of his saints. 16 Yahweh, indeed, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your servant woman; you have taken away my bonds. 17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call on the name of Yahweh. 18 I will fulfill my vows to Yahweh in the presence of all his people, 19 in the courts of Yahweh's house, in your midst, Jerusalem. Praise Yahweh.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
The river Jordan, when they were entering across it into the land of promise, when touched by the feet of the priests who bore the Ark, stood still from above with bridled stream, while it flowed down from below, where it ran on into the sea, until the whole people passed over, the priests standing on the dry ground.

Hearest thou not the Psalm that saith, "Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee?" God calleth it "bountiful dealing," and dost thou make lamentation?

Bear with me, I beseech Thee, and give me grace to retrace in my present remembrance the circlings of my past errors, and to "offer to Thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving." For what am I to myself without Thee, but a guide to mine own downfall?

"Thou hast loosed my bonds, I will offer unto Thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving." And how Thou hast loosed them I will declare; and all who worship Thee when they hear these things shall say: "Blessed be the Lord in heaven and earth, great and wonderful is His name."
