VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Initium Evangelii Jesu Christi, Filii Dei.
3 Vox clamantis in deserto: Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas ejus.]
4 Fuit Joannes in deserto baptizans, et prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum.
6 Et erat Joannes vestitus pilis cameli, et zona pellicea circa lumbos ejus, et locustas et mel silvestre edebat.
7 Et prædicabat dicens: Venit fortior post me, cujus non sum dignus procumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus.
8 Ego baptizavi vos aqua, ille vero baptizabit vos Spiritu Sancto.
9 Et factum est: in diebus illis venit Jesus a Nazareth Galilææ: et baptizatus est a Joanne in Jordane.
12 Et statim Spiritus expulit eum in desertum.
17 et dixit eis Jesus: Venite post me, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum.
19 Et progressus inde pusillum, vidit Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ipsos componentes retia in navi:
21 Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum: et statim sabbatis ingressus in synagogam, docebat eos.
23 Et erat in synagoga eorum homo in spiritu immundo: et exclamavit,
24 Diciendo: ¡Ah! ¿qué tienes con nosotros, Jesús Nazareno? ¿Has venido á destruirnos?
28 Et processit rumor ejus statim in omnem regionem Galilææ.
31 Et accedens elevavit eam, apprehensa manu ejus: et continuo dimisit eam febris, et ministrabat eis.
32 Y cuando fué la tarde, luego que el sol se puso, traían á él todos los que tenían mal, y endemoniados;
35 Et diluculo valde surgens, egressus abiit in desertum locum, ibique orabat.
36 Y le siguió Simón, y los que estaban con él;
39 Et erat prædicans in synagogis eorum, et in omni Galilæa, et dæmonia ejiciens.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:2 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter X)

… Mark, the interpreter and follower of Peter, does thus commence his Gospel narrative: "The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send My messenger before Thy face, which shall prepare Thy way. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, …

  2. Quotes verse 1:24 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book IX, Chapters 18–22)

The devils themselves knew this manifestation of God so well, that they said to the Lord though clothed with the infirmity of flesh, "What have we to do with Thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Art Thou come to destroy us before the time?" From these words, it is clear that they had great knowledge, and no charity.

  3. Quotes verse 1:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XIII)

Having then found Him in the wilderness, and in a pathless wilderness (for that the wilderness was such, Mark hath declared, saying, that He "was with the wild beasts" ), behold with how much craft he draws near, and wickedness; and for what sort of opportunity he watches.

  5. Quotes verse 1:1 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVI)

Wherefore Mark also says: "The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; as it is written in the prophets." Knowing one and the same Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was announced by the prophets, who from the fruit of David's body was Emmanuel, "the messenger of great counsel of the Father;" through whom God caused …
