2 Hermanos míos, tened por sumo gozo cuando cayereis en diversas tentaciones;
3 znajući da kušanje vaše vere gradi trpljenje;
4 a trpljenje neka delo dovršuje, da budete savršeni i celi bez ikakve mane.
5 Ako li kome od vas nedostaje premudrosti, neka ište u Boga koji daje svakome bez razlike i ne kori nikoga, i daće mu se;
9 A poniženi brat neka se hvali visinom svojom;
10 a bogati svojom poniznošću; jer će proći kao cvet travni.
11 Jer sunce ogreja s vrućinom, i osuši travu, i cvet njen otpade, i krasota lica njena pogibe; tako će i bogati u hođenju svom uvenuti.
13 Nijedan kad se kuša da ne govori: Bog me kuša; jer se Bog ne može zlom iskušati, i On ne kuša nikoga;
14 nego svakog kuša njegova slast, koja ga vuče i mami.
15 Tada zatrudnevši slast rađa greh; a greh učinjen rađa smrt.
16 Amados hermanos míos, no erréis.
17 Svaki dobri dar i svaki poklon savršeni odozgo je, dolazi od Oca svetlosti, u kog nema promenjivanja ni menjanja videla i mraka;
19 Zato, ljubazna braćo moja, neka bude svaki čovek brz čuti a spor govoriti i spor srditi se.
23 Jer ako ko sluša reč a ne tvori, on je kao čovek koji gleda lice tela svog u ogledalu;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:17 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book III, Chapters V–VII)

    But I hungered and thirsted not even after those first works of Thine, but after Thee Thyself, the Truth, "with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning;" yet they still served up to me in those dishes glowing phantasies, than which better were it to love this very sun (which, at least, is true to our sight), than those …

  2. Quotes verse 1:17 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VII)

    … not by passion, or union, not in ignorance, not by effluence, not by diminution, not by alteration, for every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow of turning.

  3. Quotes verse 1:17 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapters XV–XVI)

    How, therefore, are demons driven off by them, diseases dispelled, sick persons made well, the blind restored to sight, lepers purified, temptations and troubles overcome, and how does every good gift from the Father of lights come down through them to those who pray with sure faith?

  4. Quotes verse 1:17 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IV, Chapters XIII–XV)

    … light my candle; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness; and "of His fulness have all we received," for "that was the true Light which lighted every man that cometh into the world;" for in Thee there is "no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
