4 ustade od večere, i skide svoje haljine, i uze ubrus te se zapreže;
5 potom usu vodu u umivaonicu, i poče prati noge učenicima i otirati ubrusom kojim beše zapregnut.
6 Onda dođe k Simonu Petru, i on Mu reče: Gospode!
8 Dícele Pedro: No me lavarás los pies jamás. Respondióle Jesús: Si no te lavare, no tendrás parte conmigo.
12 A kad im opra noge, uze haljine svoje, i sedavši opet za trpezu reče im: Znate li šta ja učinih vama?
13 Vi zovete mene učiteljem i Gospodom; i pravo velite: jer jesam.
14 Kad dakle ja oprah vama noge, Gospod i učitelj, i vi ste dužni jedan drugom prati noge.
15 Porque ejemplo os he dado, para que como yo os he hecho, vosotros también hagáis.
17 Kad ovo znate, blago vama ako ga izvršujete.
20 Zaista, zaista vam kažem: Koji prima onog koga pošaljem mene prima; a ko prima mene prima Onog koji me posla.
21 Rekavši ovo Isus posta žalostan u duhu, i posvedoči i reče: Zaista, zaista vam kažem: Jedan između vas izdaće me.
25 A on leže na prsi Isusove i reče Mu: Gospode! Ko je to?
26 Isus odgovori: Onaj je kome ja umočivši zalogaj dam. I umočivši zalogaj dade Judi Simonovom Iskariotskom.
27 I po zalogaju tada uđe u njega sotona.
30 A on uzevši zalogaj odmah iziđe; a beše noć.
31 Kad on iziđe, onda Isus reče: Sad se proslavi Sin čovečiji i Bog se proslavi u Njemu.
32 Ako se Bog proslavi u Njemu, i Bog će Njega proslaviti u sebi, i odmah će Ga proslaviti.
Respondióle Jesús: Donde yo voy, no me puedes ahora seguir; mas me seguirás después.
37 Petar Mu reče: Gospode! Zašto sad ne mogu ići za Tobom? Dušu ću svoju položiti za Te.
37 Dícele Pedro: Señor, ¿por qué no te puedo seguir ahora? mi alma pondré por ti.
38 Odgovori mu Isus: Dušu li ćeš svoju položiti za me?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 13:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XIII — 1-5)

The Lord's Supper, as set forth in John, must, with His assistance, be unfolded in a becoming number of Lectures, and explained with all the ability He is pleased to grant us.

  3. Quotes verse 13:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XXI)

Now in the last days, when the fulness of the time of liberty had arrived, the Word Himself did by Himself "wash away the filth of the daughters of Zion," when He washed the disciples' feet with His own hands. For this is the end of the human race inheriting God; that as in the beginning, by means of our …
