VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
3 sciens quia omnia dedit ei Pater in manus, et quia a Deo exivit, et ad Deum vadit:
5 Deinde mittit aquam in pelvim, et cœpit lavare pedes discipulorum, et extergere linteo, quo erat præcinctus.
8 Dicit ei Petrus: Non lavabis mihi pedes in æternum. Respondit ei Jesus: Si non lavero te, non habebis partem mecum.
8 Dícele Pedro: No me lavarás los pies jamás. Respondióle Jesús: Si no te lavare, no tendrás parte conmigo.
12 Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum, et accepit vestimenta sua, cum recubuisset iterum, dixit eis: Scitis quid fecerim vobis?
13 Vos vocatis me Magister et Domine, et bene dicitis: sum etenim.
15 Porque ejemplo os he dado, para que como yo os he hecho, vosotros también hagáis.
17 Si hæc scitis, beati eritis si feceritis ea.
20 Amen, amen dico vobis: qui accipit si quem misero, me accipit; qui autem me accipit, accipit eum qui me misit.
23 Erat ergo recumbens unus ex discipulis ejus in sinu Jesu, quem diligebat Jesus.
27 Et post buccellam, introivit in eum Satanas.
33 Filioli, adhuc modicum vobiscum sum.
Respondit Jesus: Quo ego vado non potes me modo sequi: sequeris autem postea.
36 Dícele Simón Pedro: Señor, ¿adónde vas? Respondióle Jesús: Donde yo voy, no me puedes ahora seguir; mas me seguirás después.
37 Dicit ei Petrus: Quare non possum te sequi modo? animam meam pro te ponam.
37 Dícele Pedro: Señor, ¿por qué no te puedo seguir ahora? mi alma pondré por ti.
38 Respondit ei Jesus: Animam tuam pro me pones? amen, amen dico tibi: non cantabit gallus, donec ter me neges.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 13:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XIII — 1-5)

The Lord's Supper, as set forth in John, must, with His assistance, be unfolded in a becoming number of Lectures, and explained with all the ability He is pleased to grant us.

  3. Quotes verse 13:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XXI)

Now in the last days, when the fulness of the time of liberty had arrived, the Word Himself did by Himself "wash away the filth of the daughters of Zion," when He washed the disciples' feet with His own hands. For this is the end of the human race inheriting God; that as in the beginning, by means of our …
