VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
4 Et abeuntes invenerunt pullum ligatum ante januam foris in bivio: et solvunt eum.
5 καί τινες τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς· τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον;
10 benedictum quod venit regnum patris nostri David: hosanna in excelsis.
12 Et alia die cum exirent a Bethania, esuriit.
17 et docebat, dicens eis: Nonne scriptum est: Quia domus mea, domus orationis vocabitur omnibus gentibus? vos autem fecistis eam speluncam latronum.
18 Quo audito principes sacerdotum et scribæ, quærebant quomodo eum perderent: timebant enim eum, quoniam universa turba admirabatur super doctrina ejus.
20 Et cum mane transirent, viderunt ficum aridam factam a radicibus.
22 Et respondens Jesus ait illis: Habete fidem Dei.
23 Amen dico vobis, quia quicumque dixerit huic monti: Tollere, et mittere in mare, et non hæsitaverit in corde suo, sed crediderit, quia quodcumque dixerit fiat, fiet ei.
24 Propterea dico vobis, omnia quæcumque orantes petitis, credite quia accipietis, et evenient vobis.
28 καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; ἢ τίς σοι ἔδωκε τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῇς;
30 Baptismus Joannis, de cælo erat, an ex hominibus? Respondete mihi.
31 At illi cogitabant secum, dicentes: Si dixerimus: De cælo, dicet: Quare ergo non credidistis ei?
31 καὶ ἐλογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες· ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
32 Si dixerimus: Ex hominibus, timemus populum: omnes enim habebant Joannem quia vere propheta esset.
33 Et respondentes dicunt Jesu: Nescimus. Et respondens Jesus ait illis: Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc faciam.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 11:13 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXIX)

But to this is added, that as we read it in the narrative of the other Evangelist who expressly mentions this, "it was not the time for that fruit." For that was the time when the fig-tree shoots forth its tender leaves, which come, we know, before the fruit; and this we prove, because the day of the Lord's Passion …

  2. Quotes verse 11:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXVII)

"And when He saw a fig tree in the way, He came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only." Another evangelist saith, "The time of figs was not yet;" but if it was not time, how doth the other evangelist say, "He came, if haply He might find fruit thereon." Whence it is manifest that this belongs to …

  3. Quotes verse 11:13 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XLVIII)

For he who says that Christ only worked miracles, for the miracles' sake, may say too that He was ignorant that it was not the time for fruit, when He sought figs upon the fig-tree. For it was not the time for that fruit, as the Evangelist testifies; and yet being hungry He sought for fruit upon the tree.
