VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Psalmus Asaph.
50:1 A Psalm by Asaph. The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.
2 Ex Sion species decoris ejus:
50:2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines out.
50:3 Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.
4 Advocabit cælum desursum, et terram, discernere populum suum.
50:4 He calls to the heavens above, to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 Congregate illi sanctos ejus, qui ordinant testamentum ejus super sacrificia.
50:5 “Gather my saints together to me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
50:6 The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah.
7 Audi, populus meus, et loquar; Israël, et testificabor tibi: Deus, Deus tuus ego sum.
50:7 “Hear, my people, and I will speak. Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
50:8 I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices. Your burnt offerings are continually before me.
50:9 I have no need for a bull from your stall, nor male goats from your pens.
50:10 For every animal of the forest is mine, and the livestock on a thousand hills.
50:11 I know all the birds of the mountains. The wild animals of the field are mine.
50:12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13 Numquid manducabo carnes taurorum? aut sanguinem hircorum potabo?
50:13 Will I eat the meat of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14 Immola Deo sacrificium laudis, et redde Altissimo vota tua.
50:14 Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High.
15 Et invoca me in die tribulationis: eruam te, et honorificabis me.
50:15 Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
50:16 But to the wicked God says, “What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,
17 Tu vero odisti disciplinam, et projecisti sermones meos retrorsum.
50:17 since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?
50:18 When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers.
19 Os tuum abundavit malitia, et lingua tua concinnabat dolos.
50:19 “You give your mouth to evil. Your tongue frames deceit.
20 Sedens adversus fratrem tuum loquebaris, et adversus filium matris tuæ ponebas scandalum.
50:20 You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.
50:21 You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that I was just like you. I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.
50:22 “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.
23 Sacrificium laudis honorificabit me, et illic iter quo ostendam illi salutare Dei.]
50:23 Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me, and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 50.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

"Hear ye these things, all ye nations" (ver. 1). Not then you only who are here. For of what power is our voice so to cry out, as that all nations may hear?

  3. Quotes verse 50:1 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book IX, Chapter 23)

And regarding the name itself, if they see fit to call such blessed and immortal creatures gods, this need not give rise to any serious discussion between us, since in our own Scriptures we read, "The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken;" and again, "Confess to the God of gods;" and again, "He is a great King above all …

For that no man on earth was righteous, Paul declared, saying, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." And by this too the others …
