3 Porque deseara yo mismo ser apartado de Cristo por mis hermanos, los que son mis parientes según la carne;
4 Que son israelitas, de los cuales es la adopción, y la gloria, y el pacto, y la data de la ley, y el culto, y las promesas;
6 No empero que la palabra de Dios haya faltado: porque no todos los que son de Israel son Israelitas;
14 ¿Pues qué diremos? ¿Que hay injusticia en Dios? En ninguna manera.
19 Рече́ши ᲂу҆̀бо мѝ: чесѡ̀ ра́ди є҆щѐ ᲂу҆корѧ́етъ, во́ли бо є҆гѡ̀ кто̀ проти́витисѧ мо́жетъ;
20 Тѣ́мже ᲂу҆̀бо, ѽ, человѣ́че, ты̀ кто̀ є҆сѝ, проти́въ ѿвѣща́ѧй бг҃ови; є҆да̀ рече́тъ зда́нїе созда́вшемꙋ є҆̀: почто̀ мѧ̀ сотвори́лъ є҆сѝ та́кѡ;
21 И҆лѝ не и҆́мать вла́сти скꙋде́льникъ на бре́нїи, ѿ тогѡ́жде смѣше́нїѧ сотвори́ти ѻ҆́въ ᲂу҆́бѡ сосꙋ́дъ въ че́сть, ѻ҆́въ же не въ че́сть;
23 Y para hacer notorias las riquezas de su gloria, [mostrólas] para con los vasos de misericordia que él ha preparado para gloria;
30 ¿Pues qué diremos? Que los Gentiles que no seguían justicia, han alcanzado la justicia, es á saber, la justicia que es por la fe;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 9:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XVI)

    Did I not seem yesterday to you to have spoken some great and exorbitant things of Paul's love toward Christ? And great indeed they were, too great for any words to express. Yet what you have heard to-day are as far above those things, as those things were above ours.

  2. Quotes verse 9:25 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters X–XI)

  4. Quotes verse 9:5 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily IV)

Therefore that He was of us, and of our substance, and of the Virgin's womb, is manifest from these things, and from others beside; but …
