VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Veritatem dico in Christo, non mentior: testimonium mihi perhibente conscientia mea in Spiritu Sancto:
3 Porque deseara yo mismo ser apartado de Cristo por mis hermanos, los que son mis parientes según la carne;
4 Que son israelitas, de los cuales es la adopción, y la gloria, y el pacto, y la data de la ley, y el culto, y las promesas;
6 No empero que la palabra de Dios haya faltado: porque no todos los que son de Israel son Israelitas;
14 Quid ergo dicemus? numquid iniquitas apud Deum? Absit.
18 Ergo cujus vult miseretur, et quem vult indurat.
19 Dicis itaque mihi: Quid adhuc queritur? voluntati enim ejus quis resistit?
21 an non habet potestatem figulus luti ex eadem massa facere aliud quidem vas in honorem, aliud vero in contumeliam?
23 ut ostenderet divitias gloriæ suæ in vasa misericordiæ, quæ præparavit in gloriam.
23 Y para hacer notorias las riquezas de su gloria, [mostrólas] para con los vasos de misericordia que él ha preparado para gloria;
26 Et erit: in loco, ubi dictum est eis: Non plebs mea vos: ibi vocabuntur filii Dei vivi.
29 et sicut prædixit Isaias: Nisi Dominus Sabaoth reliquisset nobis semen, sicut Sodoma facti essemus, et sicut Gomorrha similes fuissemus.
30 ¿Pues qué diremos? Que los Gentiles que no seguían justicia, han alcanzado la justicia, es á saber, la justicia que es por la fe;
31 Israël vero sectando legem justitiæ, in legem justitiæ non pervenit.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 9:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XVI)

    Did I not seem yesterday to you to have spoken some great and exorbitant things of Paul's love toward Christ? And great indeed they were, too great for any words to express. Yet what you have heard to-day are as far above those things, as those things were above ours.
