2 A beše Avram vrlo bogat stokom, srebrom i zlatom.
2 Y Abram era riquísimo en ganado, en plata y oro.
3 I iđaše svojim putevima od juga sve do Vetilja, do mesta gde mu prvo beše šator, između Vetilja i Gaja,
3 Y volvió por sus jornadas [de la parte] del Mediodía hacia Bethel, hasta el lugar donde había estado antes su tienda entre Bethel y Hai;
4 do mesta, gde pre beše načinio žrtvenik; i onde prizva Avram ime Gospodnje.
5 A i Lot koji iđaše s Avramom imaše ovaca i goveda i šatora.
7 i beše svađa među pastirima Avramove stoke i pastirima Lotove stoke. A u to vreme živehu Hananeji i Ferezeji u onoj zemlji.
9 Nije li ti otvorena cela zemlja?
10 Tada Lot podiže oči svoje i sagleda svu ravnicu jordansku, kako celu natapaše reka, beše kao vrt Gospodnji, kao zemlja misirska, sve do Zagora, pre nego Gospod zatre Sodom i Gomor.
12 Avram življaše u zemlji hananskoj, a Lot življaše po gradovima u onoj ravnici premeštajući svoje šatore do Sodoma.
13 A ljudi u Sodomu behu nevaljali, i grešahu Gospodu veoma.
14 Y Jehová dijo á Abram, después que Lot se apartó de él: Alza ahora tus ojos, y mira desde el lugar donde estás hacia el Aquilón, y al Mediodía, y al Oriente y al Occidente;
15 Jer svu zemlju što vidiš tebi ću dati i semenu tvom do veka.
17 Ustani, i prolazi tu zemlju u dužinu i u širinu; jer ću je tebi dati.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 13:14–16 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters VII–XIII)

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, [so that] if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered." And again [the Scripture] saith, "God brought forth Abram, and spake unto him, Look up now to heaven, and count the stars if thou be able to number them; …

  2. Quotes verse 13:17 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Chapters XXVII–XXVIII)

For all the earth which thou seest, I will give to thee and to thy seed, even for ever." And again He says, "Arise, and go through the length and breadth of the land, since I will give it unto thee;" and [yet] he did not receive an inheritance in it, not even a footstep, but was always a stranger …

  3. Quotes verse 13:14–17 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVI, Chapters 16–21)

Arise, and walk through the land, in the length of it, and in the breadth of it; for unto thee will I give it." It does not clearly appear whether in this promise that also is contained by which he is made the father of all nations.

  4. Quotes verse 13:2 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LII)

Read the Scriptures, and thou shall find Abraham to have been a rich man. In order that thou mayest know, that not riches are blamed; Abraham had much gold, silver, cattle, household, was a rich man, and unto his bosom Lazarus, a poor man, was borne up.

  5. Quotes verse 13:2 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXVI)

It is certain that the poor man was carried into the bosom of Abraham: of Abraham himself Scripture saith that he had here very much gold and silver, and was rich on the earth. If every one that is rich is hurried away to be tormented, how could Abraham have gone before that poor man, so as to be ready …
