2 Jer ništa nije sakriveno što se neće otkriti, ni tajno što se neće doznati;
8 Nego vam kažem: koji god prizna mene pred ljudima priznaće i Sin čovečiji njega pred anđelima Božijim;
8 Y os digo que todo aquel que me confesare delante de los hombres, también el Hijo del hombre le confesará delante de los ángeles de Dios;
11 A kad vas dovedu u zbornice i na sudove i pred poglavare, ne brinite se kako ćete ili šta odgovoriti, ili šta ćete kazati;
11 Y cuando os trajeren á las sinagogas, y á los magistrados y potestades, no estéis solícitos cómo ó qué hayáis de responder, ó qué hayáis de decir;
14 A On mu reče: Čoveče!
16 Y refirióles una parábola, diciendo: La heredad de un hombre rico había llevado mucho;
17 I mišljaše u sebi govoreći: Šta ću činiti?
18 I reče: Evo ovo ću činiti: pokvariću žitnice svoje i načiniću veće; i onde ću sabrati sva svoja žita i dobro svoje;
18 Y dijo: Esto haré: derribaré mis alfolíes, y los edificaré mayores, y allí juntaré todos mis frutos y mis bienes;
19 i kazaću duši svojoj: Dušo!
19 Y diré á mi alma: Alma, muchos bienes tienes almacenados para muchos años; repósate, come, bebe, huélgate.
20 A Bog njemu reče: Bezumniče!
29 I vi ne ištite šta ćete jesti ili šta ćete piti, i ne brinite se;
30 jer ovo sve ištu i neznabošci ovog sveta; a Otac vaš zna da vama treba ovo.
31 Nego ištite carstvo Božije, i ovo će vam se sve dodati.
35 Neka budu vaša bedra zapregnuta i sveće zapaljene;
35 Estén ceñidos vuestros lomos, y vuestras antorchas encendidas;
38 I ako dođe u drugu stražu, i u treću stražu dođe, i nađe ih tako, blago onim slugama.
41 A Petar Mu reče: Gospode!
45 Ako li kaže sluga u srcu svom: Neće moj gospodar još zadugo doći; i stane biti sluge i sluškinje, i jesti i piti, i opijati se;
45 Mas si el tal siervo dijere en su corazón: Mi señor tarda en venir: y comenzare á herir á los siervos y á las criadas, y á comer y á beber y á embriagarse;
47 A onaj sluga koji zna volju gospodara svog, i nije se pripravio, niti učinio po volji njegovoj, biće vrlo bijen;
51 ¿Pensáis que he venido á la tierra á dar paz?
53 Ustaće otac na sina i sin na oca; mati na kćer i kći na mater; svekrva na snahu svoju i snaha na svekrvu svoju.
55 I kad vidite jug gde duva kažete: Biće vrućina; i biva.
56 Licemeri! Lice neba i zemlje umete poznavati, a vreme ovo kako ne poznajete?
59 Kažem ti: nećeš odande izići dok ne daš i poslednji dinar.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 12:15 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LVII)

    I doubt not but that ye who fear God, do hear His word with awe, and execute it with cheerfulness; that what He hath promised, ye may at present hope for, hereafter receive. We have just now heard the Lord Christ Jesus, the Son of God, giving us a precept.

  2. Quotes verse 12:50 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XX–XXI)

    And to this He refers when He says, "And I have another baptism to be baptized with, and I hasten eagerly towards it." Moreover, they affirm that the Lord added this redemption to the sons of Zebedee, when their mother asked that they might sit, the one on His right hand, and the other on His left, in His kingdom, …

  3. Quotes verse 12:4 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Chapters 11–13)

    If this be so, then that is false which Christ says, "Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do;" for it seems they can do great injury to the dead body.

  4. Quotes verse 12:47 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXVI)

    "For mighty" men (it is said) "shall be mightily tormented:" and "He that knew his Lord's will, and doeth it not, shall be beaten with many stripes." So that more knowledge is a ground of more punishment.

  5. Quotes verse 12:28 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VI)

    And he who says again that the Father is one, and the maker of the world another, opposes the Son when He says, If then God so clothes the grass of the field which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the furnace of fire; and, Who maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, …
