2 I posle šest dana uze Isus Petra i Jakova i Jovana i izvede ih na visoku goru same; i preobrazi se pred njima.
5 I Petar odgovarajući reče Isusu: Ravi!
5 Entonces respondiendo Pedro, dice á Jesús: Maestro, bien será que nos quedemos aquí, y hagamos tres pabellones: para ti uno, y para Moisés otro, y para Elías otro;
8 I ujedanput pogledavši, nikoga ne videše osim Isusa samog sa sobom.
10 I reč zadržaše u sebi pitajući jedan drugog: Šta to znači ustati iz mrtvih?
11 I pitahu Ga govoreći: Kako govore književnici da Ilija treba najpre da dođe?
14 I došavši k učenicima svojim vide narod mnogi oko njih i književnike gde se prepiru s njima.
15 I odmah videvši Ga sav narod uplaši se i pritrčavši pozdravljahu Ga.
16 I upita književnike: Šta se prepirete s njima?
16 Y preguntóles: ¿Qué disputáis con ellos?
17 I odgovarajući jedan od naroda reče: Učitelju! Dovedoh k Tebi sina svog u kome je duh nemi.
19 A On odgovarajući mu reče: O rode neverni! Dokle ću s vama biti? Dokle ću vas trpeti? Dovedite ga k meni.
A on reče: Iz detinjstva.
24 I odmah povikavši otac detinji sa suzama govoraše: Verujem, Gospode! Pomozi mom neverju.
27 A Isus uzevši ga za ruku podiže ga: i usta.
28 I kad uđe u kuću, pitahu Ga učenici Njegovi nasamo: Zašto ga mi nismo mogli isterati?
33 I dođe u Kapernaum, i kad beše u kući zapita ih: Šta se prepiraste putem među sobom?
36 I uzevši dete metnu ga među njih i zagrlivši ga reče im:
40 Jer ko nije protiv vas s vama je.
43 Y si tu mano te escandalizare, córtala: mejor te es entrar á la vida manco, que teniendo dos manos ir á la Gehenna, al fuego que no puede ser apagado;
45 Y si tu pie te fuere ocasión de caer, córtalo: mejor te es entrar á la vida cojo, que teniendo dos pies ser echado en la Gehenna, al fuego que no puede ser apagado;
47 Y si tu ojo te fuere ocasión de caer, sácalo: mejor te es entrar al reino de Dios con un ojo, que teniendo dos ojos ser echado á la Gehenna;
50 Dobra je so; ali ako so bude neslana, čim će se osoliti? Imajte so u sebi, i mir imajte među sobom.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 9:44 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapters XXXI–XXXII)

… "The righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father;" but He shall send the unrighteous, and those who do not the works of righteousness, "into everlasting fire, where their worm shall not die, and the fire shall not be quenched."

  2. Quotes verse 9:43–48 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 9–10)

… fire is not quenched." So, too, of the eye: "It is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched." He did not shrink from using the same words three times over in one passage.

  3. Quotes verse 9:38 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLI)

For here He signified one actually against them, but there He points to one who in part is on their side: "For they cast out devils," it is said "in Thy name." But to me He seems here to be hinting also at the Jews, setting them on the devil's side.

  4. Quotes verse 9:24 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture V)

Nay, even if thou be faithless, or of little faith, the Lord is loving unto man; He condescends to thee on thy repentance: only on thy part say with honest mind, Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief.

  5. Quotes verse 9:25 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters VII–VIII)

… note how, whenever He instructs us about His Father, He is in the habit of using terms of personal authority, saying, "I will; be thou clean;" and "Peace, be still;" and "But I say unto you;" and "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee;" and all other expressions of the same kind, in order that by these we may …
