4 Ponosite oči i naduto srce i oranje bezbožničko greh je.
5 Misli vrednog čoveka donose obilje, a svakog nagla siromaštvo.
8 Čiji je put kriv, on je tuđ; a ko je čist, njegovo je delo pravo.
11 Kad podsmevač biva karan, ludi mudra; i kad se mudri poučava, prima znanje.
14 Dar u tajnosti utišava gnev i poklon u nedrima žestoku srdnju.
17 Ko ljubi veselje, biće siromah; ko ljubi vino i ulje, neće se obogatiti.
18 Otkup za pravednike biće bezbožnik i za dobre bezakonik.
20 Dragoceno je blago i ulje u stanu mudroga, a čovek bezuman proždire ga.
21 Ko ide za pravdom i milošću, naći će život, pravdu i slavu.
22 U grad jakih ulazi mudri, i obara silu u koju se uzdaju.
23 Ko čuva usta svoja i jezik svoj, čuva dušu svoju od nevolja.
25 Lenjivca ubija želja, jer ruke njegove neće da rade;
26 Svaki dan želi; a pravednik daje i ne štedi.
27 Žrtva je bezbožnička gad, a kamoli kad je prinose u grehu?
28 Lažni svedok poginuće, a čovek koji sluša govoriće svagda.
29 Bezbožnik je bezobrazan, a pravednik udešava svoje pute.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 21:1 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Chapter XIX)

… end, when he said, "All these are delivered unto me, and to whomsoever I will I give them." For it is not he who has appointed the kingdoms of this world, but God; for "the heart of the king is in the hand of God." And the Word also says by Solomon, "By me kings do reign, and princes administer …

  2. Quotes verse 21:1 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

For the waters are fled from the rebuke of God; because "the heart of kings is in the hand of God, He hath bent it whither He would;" He commanded peace to be given by them to the Christians; the authority of the Apostles sprang up and towered high....The waters fled from the rebuke of God.

  3. Quotes verse 21:20 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

Let each, as he can recall to mind what he hath heard, by mutual conversation stir up the food ye have received, ruminate on what ye have heard, let it not descend in you into the bowels of forgetfulness. Let the treasure to be desired rest upon your lips.
