1 Načelniku pevača Idutunovih. Asafov psalam. Glas moj ide k Bogu, i ja prizivam Njega; glas moj ide k Bogu, i On će me uslišiti.
1 Al Músico principal: para Jeduthún: Salmo de Asaph. CON mi voz clamé á Dios, á Dios clamé, y él me escuchará.
1 For the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm by Asaph. My cry goes to God! Indeed, I cry to God for help, and for him to listen to me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn’t get tired. My soul refused to be comforted.
3 Pominjem Boga, i uzdišem; razmišljam, i trne duh moj.
(Selah.)
3 I remember God, and I groan. I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.
4 You hold my eyelids open. I am so troubled that I can’t speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6 I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires:
7 “Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more?
8 Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations?
(Selah.)
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?” Selah.
10 Then I thought, “I will appeal to this: the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
11 I will remember Yah’s deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old.
12 Mislio sam o svim delima Tvojim, razmišljao o radnji Tvojoj;
12 I will also meditate on all your work, and consider your doings.
13 Your way, God, is in the sanctuary. What god is great like God?
14 Ti si Bog, koji si činio čudesa, pokazivao silu svoju među narodima;
14 You are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples.
15 Mišicom si odbranio narod svoj, sinove Jakovljeve i Josifove.
(Selah.)
15 You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 Videše Te vode, Bože, videše Te vode, i ustreptaše, i bezdane se zadrmaše.
16 The waters saw you, God. The waters saw you, and they writhed. The depths also convulsed.
17 Iz oblaka lijaše voda, oblaci davahu glas, i strele Tvoje lećahu.
17 The clouds poured out water. The skies resounded with thunder. Your arrows also flashed around.
18 The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.
19 Your way was through the sea, your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.
20 Vodio si narod svoj kao ovce rukom Mojsijevom i Aronovom.
20 You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXVI)

The Jews are wont to glory in this Psalm which we have sung, saying, "Known in Judæa is God, in Israel great is the name of Him:" and to revile the Gentiles to whom God is not known, and to say that to themselves alone God is known; seeing that the Prophet saith, "Known in Judæa is God." In other …

  2. Quotes verse 77:9 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 17–19)

The verse runs: "Shall God forget to be gracious? Shall He in anger shut up His tender mercies?" His anger, they say, would condemn all that are unworthy of everlasting happiness to endless punishment.

shall He shut up in His anger His tender mercies" as if the sentence of God were true of good men, false of bad men, or true of good men and wicked angels, but false of bad men.
