108:2 Despiértate, salterio y arpa: despertaré al alba.
108:8 Mío es Galaad, mío es Manasés; y Ephraim es la fortaleza de mi cabeza; Judá es mi legislador;
11 Кто̀ введе́тъ мѧ̀ во гра́дъ ѡ҆гражде́нїѧ; и҆лѝ кто̀ наста́витъ мѧ̀ до і҆дꙋме́и;
108:10 ¿Quién me guiará á la ciudad fortalecida? ¿quién me guiará hasta Idumea?
12 Не ты́ ли, бж҃е, ѿри́нꙋвый на́съ, и҆ не и҆зы́деши, бж҃е, въ си́лахъ на́шихъ;
108:13 En Dios haremos proezas: y él hollará nuestros enemigos.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 108.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CVII)

    This Psalm commendeth unto us the mercies of God, proved in ourselves, and is therefore the sweeter to the experienced. And it is a wonder if it can be pleasing to any one, except to him who has learned in his own case, what he hears in this Psalm.

  2. Quotes verse 108:5 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XII — 12-26)

    To this it is that the prediction pointed, "Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and Thy glory above all the earth." Such is the fullness of the Gentiles, of which the apostle saith, "Blindness in part is happened to Israel, till the fullness of the Gentiles come in."

  3. Quotes verse 108:5 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XVI — 13-15)

    His true glory, therefore, in the Catholic Church is celebrated in these words by the prophet: "Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; and Thy glory above all the earth." Accordingly, that after His exaltation the Holy Spirit was to come, and to glorify Him, the sacred psalm, and the Only-begotten Himself, promised as an event of the future, …
