1 I dođoše preko mora u okolinu gadarinsku.
2 I kad iziđe iz lađe, odmah Ga srete čovek s duhom nečistim,
3 koji življaše u grobovima i niko ga ne mogaše svezati ni verigama;
3 Que tenía domicilio en los sepulcros, y ni aun con cadenas le podía alguien atar;
5 I jednako dan i noć bavljaše se u grobovima i u gorama vičući i bijući se kamenjem.
7 I povikavši glasno reče: Šta je Tebi do mene, Isuse Sine Boga Višnjeg? Zaklinjem Te Bogom, ne muči me.
9 I pitaše ga: Kako ti je ime? I odgovori Mu: Legeon mi je ime; jer nas je mnogo.
9 Y le preguntó: ¿Cómo te llamas? Y respondió diciendo: Legión me llamo; porque somos muchos.
12 I moliše Ga svi đavoli govoreći: Pošalji nas u svinje da u njih uđemo.
13 I dopusti im Isus odmah. I izašavši duhovi nečisti uđoše u svinje; i navali krdo s brega u more; a beše ih oko dve hiljade: i potopiše se u moru.
20 I ode i poče pripovedati u Deset gradova šta mu učini Isus; i svi se divljahu.
24 I pođe s njim. I za Njim iđaše naroda mnogo i turkahu Ga.
33 A žena uplašivši se drhtaše, i znajući šta joj se dogodi, dođe i kleče pred Njim, i kaza Mu svu istinu.
34 A On reče joj: Kćeri!
38 I dođe u kuću starešine zborničkog, i vide vrevu i plač i jauk veliki.
39 I ušavši reče im: Šta ste uzavreli te plačete? Devojka nije umrla, nego spava.
39 Y entrando, les dice: ¿Por qué alborotáis y lloráis? La muchacha no es muerta, mas duerme.
40 I podsmevahu Mu se. A On isteravši sve uze oca devojčinog i mater i koji behu s Njim, i uđe gde ležaše devojka.
42 I odmah usta devojka i hođaše; a beše od dvanaest godina. I začudiše se čudom velikim.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:31 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters III–IV)

For after she had been thus afflicted during twelve years, she was healed by the advent of the Saviour, when she had touched the border of His garment; and on this account the Saviour said, "Who touched me?" --teaching his disciples the mystery which had occurred among the Æons, and the healing of that Æon who had been involved in …

But He went on, and said to the father of the damsel, "Be not afraid, only believe." He comes …

  3. Quotes verse 5:35 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXI)

With this view He both walks more leisurely, and discourses more with the woman; that He might give time for the damsel to die, and for those to come, who told of it, and said, "Trouble not the Master." This again surely the evangelist obscurely signifies, when he saith, "While He yet spake, there came from the house certain which …
