VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Oratio ipsi David. [Inclina, Domine, aurem tuam et exaudi me, quoniam inops et pauper sum ego.
86:1 A Prayer by David. Hear, Yahweh, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.
2 Custodi animam meam, quoniam sanctus sum; salvum fac servum tuum, Deus meus, sperantem in te.
86:2 Preserve my soul, for I am godly. You, my God, save your servant who trusts in you.
3 Miserere mei, Domine, quoniam ad te clamavi tota die;
86:3 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.
4 lætifica animam servi tui, quoniam ad te, Domine, animam meam levavi.
86:4 Bring joy to the soul of your servant, for to you, Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 Quoniam tu, Domine, suavis et mitis, et multæ misericordiæ omnibus invocantibus te.
86:5 For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, abundant in loving kindness to all those who call on you.
6 Auribus percipe, Domine, orationem meam, et intende voci deprecationis meæ.
86:6 Hear, Yahweh, my prayer. Listen to the voice of my petitions.
7 In die tribulationis meæ clamavi ad te, quia exaudisti me.
86:7 In the day of my trouble I will call on you, for you will answer me.
8 Non est similis tui in diis, Domine, et non est secundum opera tua.
86:8 There is no one like you among the gods, Lord, nor any deeds like your deeds.
9 Omnes gentes quascumque fecisti venient, et adorabunt coram te, Domine, et glorificabunt nomen tuum.
86:9 All nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord. They shall glorify your name.
10 Quoniam magnus es tu, et faciens mirabilia; tu es Deus solus.
86:10 For you are great, and do wondrous things. You are God alone.
11 Deduc me, Domine, in via tua, et ingrediar in veritate tua; lætetur cor meum, ut timeat nomen tuum.
86:11 Teach me your way, Yahweh. I will walk in your truth. Make my heart undivided to fear your name.
12 Confitebor tibi, Domine Deus meus, in toto corde meo, et glorificabo nomen tuum in æternum:
86:12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with my whole heart. I will glorify your name forever more.
13 quia misericordia tua magna est super me, et eruisti animam meam ex inferno inferiori.
86:13 For your loving kindness is great toward me. You have delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.
14 Deus, iniqui insurrexerunt super me, et synagoga potentium quæsierunt animam meam: et non proposuerunt te in conspectu suo.
86:14 God, the proud have risen up against me. A company of violent men have sought after my soul, and they don’t hold regard for you before them.
15 Et tu, Domine Deus, miserator et misericors; patiens, et multæ misericordiæ, et verax.
86:15 But you, Lord, are a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth.
16 Respice in me, et miserere mei; da imperium tuum puero tuo, et salvum fac filium ancillæ tuæ.
86:16 Turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give your strength to your servant. Save the son of your servant.
17 Fac mecum signum in bonum, ut videant qui oderunt me, et confundantur: quoniam tu, Domine, adjuvisti me, et consolatus es me.]
86:17 Show me a sign of your goodness, that those who hate me may see it, and be shamed, because you, Yahweh, have helped me, and comforted me.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 86.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXV)

Its title is, "A Psalm for the end, to the sons of Core." Let us understand no other end than that of which the Apostle speaks: for, "Christ is the end of the law." Therefore when at the head of the title of the Psalm he placed the words, "for the end," he directed our heart to Christ.

  2. Quotes verse 86:15 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book I, Chapters XIV–XVIII)

Thou seest this, O Lord, and keepest silence, "long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth," as Thou art.

  3. Quotes verse 86:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVII)

… so too, the Old Testament uses in the same way to correct the souls of the erring, by putting together in a way of comparison things that cannot be compared; as when it saith, "Among the gods there is none like unto Thee, O Lord:" and again, "There is no god like our God." Now some affirm, that Christ said …

  4. Quotes verse 86:4 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon II)

… I may say of it, think ye that in this "body which presseth down the soul," I shall be able to say (in order that I may speak to you something worthy of the subject), "O Lord, I have lifted up my soul unto Thee." May He assist me, may He lift it up with me.

  5. Quotes verse 86:11 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter X — 1-10)

But let all of us be guided by Him to whom we say, "Lead me, O Lord, in Thy way, and I will walk in Thy truth."
