1 Jedanput pak, kad narod naleže k Njemu da slušaju reč Božiju On stajaše kod jezera genisaretskog,
2 i vide dve lađe gde stoje u kraju, a ribari behu izišli iz njih i ispirahu mreže:
4 A kad presta govoriti, reče Simonu: Hajde na dubinu, i bacite mreže svoje te lovite.
5 I odgovarajući Simon reče Mu: Učitelju!
6 I učinivši to uhvatiše veliko mnoštvo riba, i mreže im se prodreše.
8 A kad vide Simon Petar, pripade ka kolenima Isusovim govoreći: Iziđi od mene, Gospode!
9 Jer beše ušao strah u njega i u sve koji behu s njim od mnoštva riba koje uhvatiše;
9 Porque temor le había rodeado, y á todos los que estaban con él, de la presa de los peces que habían tomado;
12 I kad beše Isus u jednom gradu, i gle, čovek sav u gubi: i videvši Isusa pade ničice moleći Mu se i govoreći: Gospode! Ako hoćeš možeš me očistiti.
13 I pruživši ruku dohvati ga se. I reče: Hoću, očisti se. I odmah guba spade s njega.
16 A On odlažaše u pustinju i moljaše se Bogu.
17 I jedan dan učaše On, i onde seđahu fariseji i zakonici koji behu došli iz sviju sela galilejskih i judejskih i iz Jerusalima; i sila Gospodnja isceljivaše ih.
18 I gle, ljudi donesoše na odru čoveka koji beše uzet, i tražahu da ga unesu i metnu preda Nj;
19 Y no hallando por donde meterle á causa de la multitud, subieron encima de la casa, y por el tejado le bajaron con el lecho en medio, delante de Jesús;
20 I videvši veru njihovu reče mu: Čoveče!
22 A kad razume Isus pomisli njihove, odgovarajući reče im: Šta mislite u srcima svojim?
25 I odmah ustade pred njima, i uze na čemu ležaše, i otide kući svojoj hvaleći Boga.
26 I svi se zaprepastiše, i hvaljahu Boga, i napunivši se straha govorahu: Čuda se nagledasmo danas!
28 I ostavivši sve, ustade i pođe za Njim.
30 I vikahu na Njega književnici i fariseji govoreći učenicima Njegovim: Zašto s carinicima i grešnicima jedete i pijete?
31 I odgovarajući Isus reče im: Ne trebaju zdravi lekara nego bolesni.
32 No he venido á llamar justos, sino pecadores á arrepentimiento.
37 I niko ne lije vino novo u mehove stare; inače prodre novo vino mehove i ono se prolije, i mehovi propadnu;
38 nego vino novo u mehove nove treba liti, i oboje će se sačuvati.
39 I niko pivši staro neće odmah novog; jer veli: Staro je bolje.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:31 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Preface)

    But that the Lord came as the physician of the sick, He does Himself declare saying, "They that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." How then shall the sick be strengthened, or how shall sinners come to repentance?

  2. Quotes verse 5:3–7 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XX — 30-31, and XXI. 1-11)

    There the multitude of fishes caught was so great, that the two vessels were filled and began to sink, that is, were weighed down to the point of sinking; for they did not actually sink, but were in extreme jeopardy.

  4. Quotes verse 5:36 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XXXIV)

    … Father at one time the Founder of the world, and at another Him who is above this one, as He does Himself declare: "No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old one, nor do they put new wine into old bottles." Let these men, therefore, either have nothing whatever to do with the prophets, as with …

  5. Quotes verse 5:20 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXXVII)

    Let me, as far as I am able, do that which was praised in those who opened the roof, and let down the sick of the palsy before Christ; that He might say unto him, "Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee." For it was so that He made the inner man whole of his palsy, by …
