1 Hvalite Gospoda, jer je dobar; jer je doveka milost Njegova.
1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed by Yahweh say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
3 and gathered out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
4 Lutaše po pustinji gde se ne živi, puta gradu naseljenom ne nahodiše;
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way. They found no city to live in.
5 Behu gladni i žedni, i duša njihova iznemagaše u njima;
5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 He led them also by a straight way, that they might go to a city to live in.
8 Neka hvale Gospoda za milost Njegovu, i za čudesa Njegova radi sinova ljudskih!
8 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
9 Jer siti dušu taštu, i dušu gladnu puni dobra.
9 For he satisfies the longing soul. He fills the hungry soul with good.
10 Sedeše u tami i u senu smrtnom, okovani u tugu i u gvožđe;
10 Los que moraban en tinieblas y sombra de muerte, aprisionados en aflicción y en hierros;
10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron,
11 because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.
12 Por lo que quebrantó él con trabajo sus corazones, cayeron y no hubo quien [les] ayudase;
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was no one to help.
13 Ali zavikaše ka Gospodu u tuzi svojoj, i izbavi ih iz nevolje njihove;
13 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 Izvede ih iz tame i sena smrtnog, i raskide okove njihove.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains.
15 Neka hvale Gospoda za milost Njegovu, i za čudesa Njegova radi sinova ljudskih!
15 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
16 Jer razbi vrata bronzana, i prevornice gvozdene slomi.
16 For he has broken the gates of bronze, and cut through bars of iron.
17 Bezumnici stradaše za nevaljale puteve svoje, i za nepravde svoje.
17 Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities.
18 Svako se jelo gadilo duši njihovoj, i dođoše do vrata smrtnih.
18 Their soul abhors all kinds of food. They draw near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he saves them out of their distresses.
20 Posla reč svoju i isceli ih, i izbavi ih iz groba njihovog.
20 He sends his word, and heals them, and delivers them from their graves.
21 Neka hvale Gospoda za milost Njegovu, i za čudesa Njegova radi sinova ljudskih!
21 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
22 I neka prinesu žrtvu za hvalu, i kazuju dela Njegova u pesmama!
22 Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his deeds with singing.
23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters,
24 Oni su videli dela Gospodnja, i čudesa Njegova u dubini.
24 these see Yahweh’s deeds, and his wonders in the deep.
25 Kaže, i diže se silan vetar, i ustaju vali na njemu,
25 For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.
26 Dižu se do nebesa i spuštaju do bezdana: duša se njihova u nevolji razliva;
26 They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.
27 They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.
29 On obraća vetar u tišinu, i vali njihovi umuknu.
29 He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.
30 Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.
31 Neka hvale Gospoda za milost Njegovu, i za čudesa Njegova radi sinova ljudskih!
31 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!
32 Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the seat of the elders.
33 On pretvara reke u pustinju, i izvore vodene u suhotu,
33 El vuelve los ríos en desierto, y los manantiales de las aguas en secadales;
33 He turns rivers into a desert, water springs into a thirsty ground,
34 and a fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 On pretvara pustinju u jezera, i suvu zemlju u izvore vodene,
35 He turns a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into water springs.
36 I naseljava onamo gladne. Oni zidaju gradove za življenje;
36 Y allí aposenta á los hambrientos, y disponen ciudad para habitación;
36 There he makes the hungry live, that they may prepare a city to live in,
37 Seju polja, sade vinograde i sabiraju letinu.
37 Y siembran campos, y plantan viñas, y rinden crecido fruto.
37 sow fields, plant vineyards, and reap the fruits of increase.
38 Blagosilja ih i množe se jako, i stoke im ne umanjuje.
38 He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly. He doesn’t allow their livestock to decrease.
39 Again, they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.
40 He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
41 On izvlači ubogoga iz nevolje, i plemena množi kao stado.
41 Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.
42 Dobri vide i raduju se, a svako nevaljalstvo zatiskuje usta svoja.
42 The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths.
43 Ko je mudar, neka zapamti ovo, i neka poznaju milosti Gospodnje.
43 Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things. They will consider the loving kindnesses of Yahweh.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CVI)

    This Psalm also hath the title Allelujah prefixed to it: and this twice. But some say, that one Allelujah belongeth to the end of the former Psalm, the other to the beginning of this.

  2. Quotes verse 107:16 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVI)

    How then were "the gates of brass burst, and the bars of iron broken in sunder"? By His body; for then first was a body shown, immortal, and destroying the tyranny of death.

  3. Quotes verse 107:20 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapters XVII–XVIII)

    … through an instrument or a servant, but as through His essential and hypostatic Word and Wisdom and Power, because but one action is observed in Father and Son, as for example, All things were made by Him, and He sent His Word and healed them, and That they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.
