VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Ipsi David. [Judica, Domine, nocentes me; expugna impugnantes me.
35:1 By David. Contend, Yahweh, with those who contend with me. Fight against those who fight against me.
2 Apprehende arma et scutum, et exsurge in adjutorium mihi.
35:2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help.
3 Effunde frameam, et conclude adversus eos qui persequuntur me; dic animæ meæ: Salus tua ego sum.
35:3 Brandish the spear and block those who pursue me. Tell my soul, “I am your salvation.”
4 Confundantur et revereantur quærentes animam meam; avertantur retrorsum et confundantur cogitantes mihi mala.
35:4 Let those who seek after my soul be disappointed and brought to dishonor. Let those who plot my ruin be turned back and confounded.
5 Fiant tamquam pulvis ante faciem venti, et angelus Domini coarctans eos.
35:5 Let them be as chaff before the wind, Yahweh’s angel driving them on.
6 Fiat via illorum tenebræ et lubricum, et angelus Domini persequens eos.
35:6 Let their way be dark and slippery, Yahweh’s angel pursuing them.
7 Quoniam gratis absconderunt mihi interitum laquei sui; supervacue exprobraverunt animam meam.
35:7 For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me. Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul.
35:8 Let destruction come on him unawares. Let his net that he has hidden catch himself. Let him fall into that destruction.
35:9 My soul shall be joyful in Yahweh. It shall rejoice in his salvation.
10 Omnia ossa mea dicent: Domine, quis similis tibi? eripiens inopem de manu fortiorum ejus; egenum et pauperem a diripientibus eum.
35:10 All my bones shall say, “Yahweh, who is like you, who delivers the poor from him who is too strong for him; yes, the poor and the needy from him who robs him?”
11 Surgentes testes iniqui, quæ ignorabam interrogabant me.
35:11 Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I don’t know about.
12 Retribuebant mihi mala pro bonis, sterilitatem animæ meæ.
35:12 They reward me evil for good, to the bereaving of my soul.
35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer returned into my own bosom.
14 Quasi proximum et quasi fratrem nostrum sic complacebam; quasi lugens et contristatus sic humiliabar.
35:14 I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother.
15 Et adversum me lætati sunt, et convenerunt; congregata sunt super me flagella, et ignoravi.
35:15 But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease.
16 Dissipati sunt, nec compuncti; tentaverunt me, subsannaverunt me subsannatione; frenduerunt super me dentibus suis.
35:16 Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.
17 Domine, quando respicies? Restitue animam meam a malignitate eorum; a leonibus unicam meam.
35:17 Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my soul from their destruction, my precious life from the lions.
18 Confitebor tibi in ecclesia magna; in populo gravi laudabo te.
35:18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly. I will praise you among many people.
35:19 Don’t let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those who hate me without a cause wink their eyes.
20 Quoniam mihi quidem pacifice loquebantur; et in iracundia terræ loquentes, dolos cogitabant.
35:20 For they don’t speak peace, but they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 Et dilataverunt super me os suum; dixerunt: Euge, euge ! viderunt oculi nostri.
35:21 Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, “Aha! Aha! Our eye has seen it!”
22 Vidisti, Domine: ne sileas; Domine, ne discedas a me.
35:22 You have seen it, Yahweh. Don’t keep silent. Lord, don’t be far from me.
23 Exsurge et intende judicio meo, Deus meus; et Dominus meus, in causam meam.
35:23 Wake up! Rise up to defend me, my God! My Lord, contend for me!
24 Judica me secundum justitiam tuam, Domine Deus meus, et non supergaudeant mihi.
35:24 Vindicate me, Yahweh my God, according to your righteousness. Don’t let them gloat over me.
35:25 Don’t let them say in their heart, “Aha! That’s the way we want it!” Don’t let them say, “We have swallowed him up!”
35:26 Let them be disappointed and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.
35:27 Let those who favor my righteous cause shout for joy and be glad. Yes, let them say continually, “May Yahweh be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant!”
28 Et lingua mea meditabitur justitiam tuam; tota die laudem tuam.]
35:28 My tongue shall talk about your righteousness and about your praise all day long.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 35.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXXIV)

Because there was there a sacrifice after the order of Aaron, and afterwards He of His Own Body and Blood appointed a sacrifice after the order of Melchizedek; He changed then His Countenance in the Priesthood, and sent away the kingdom of the Jews, and came to the Gentiles. What then is, "He affected"? He was full of affection.

… liberty, and been made partakers of His gifts, do possess a greater amount of grace, and a higher degree of exultation, rejoicing because of the King's arrival: as also David says, "My soul shall rejoice in the Lord; it shall be glad in His salvation." And for this cause, upon His entrance into Jerusalem, all those who were in the …

  3. Quotes verse 35:14 Augustine of Hippo, On Christian Doctrine (Book I, Chapters 25–30)

And the Psalmist says in his prayer, "I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother." But as the Divine nature is of higher excellence than, and far removed above, our nature, the command to love God is distinct from that to love our neighbor.

  5. Quotes verse 35:2 Augustine of Hippo, On Christian Doctrine (Book III, Chapters 22–27)

For example, there is no better way of understanding the words addressed to God, "Take hold of shield and buckler and stand up for mine help," than by referring to the passage where we read, "Thou, Lord, hast crowned us with Thy favor as with a shield." And yet we are not so to understand it, as that wherever we …
