RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
6 Díceles entonces Jesús: Mi tiempo aun no ha venido; mas vuestro tiempo siempre está presto.
9 Y habiéndoles dicho esto, quedóse en Galilea.
11 Οι Ιουδαίοι λοιπόν εζήτουν αυτόν εν τη εορτή και έλεγον· Που είναι εκείνος;
15 Και εθαύμαζον οι Ιουδαίοι, λέγοντες· Πως ούτος εξεύρει γράμματα, ενώ δεν έμαθεν;
15 Y maravillábanse los Judíos, diciendo: ¿Cómo sabe éste letras, no habiendo aprendido?
19 Ο Μωϋσής δεν σας έδωκε τον νόμον; και ουδείς από σας εκπληροί τον νόμον. Διά τι ζητείτε να μη θανατώσητε;
20 Απεκρίθη ο όχλος και είπε· Δαιμόνιον έχεις· τις ζητεί να σε θανατώση;
20 Respondió la gente, y dijo: Demonio tienes: ¿quién te procura matar?
21 Jesús respondió, y díjoles: Una obra hice, y todos os maravilláis.
23 Εάν λαμβάνη άνθρωπος περιτομήν εν σαββάτω, διά να μη λυθή ο νόμος του Μωϋσέως, οργίζεσθε κατ' εμού διότι έκαμον ολόκληρον άνθρωπον υγιή εν σαββάτω;
25 Έλεγον λοιπόν τινές εκ των Ιεροσολυμιτών· Δεν είναι ούτος, τον οποίον ζητούσι να θανατώσωσι;
26 Και ιδού, παρρησία λαλεί, και δεν λέγουσι προς αυτόν ουδέν. Μήπως τωόντι εγνώρισαν οι άρχοντες ότι ούτος είναι αληθώς ο Χριστός;
31 Πολλοί δε εκ του όχλου επίστευσαν εις αυτόν και έλεγον ότι ο Χριστός όταν έλθη, μήπως θέλει κάμει θαύματα πλειότερα τούτων, τα οποία ούτος έκαμεν;
34 Me buscaréis, y no me hallaréis; y donde yo estaré, vosotros no podréis venir.
35 Είπον λοιπόν οι Ιουδαίοι προς αλλήλους· Που μέλλει ούτος να υπάγη, ώστε ημείς δεν θέλομεν ευρεί αυτόν; Μήπως μέλλει να υπάγη εις τους διεσπαρμένους μεταξύ των Ελλήνων και να διδάσκη τους Έλληνας;
36 Τις είναι ούτος ο λόγος τον οποίον είπε, Θέλετε με ζητήσει και δεν θέλετε με ευρεί, και, όπου είμαι εγώ, σεις δεν δύνασθε να έλθητε;
41 Άλλοι έλεγον· Ούτος είναι ο Χριστός. Άλλοι δε έλεγον· Μη γαρ εκ της Γαλιλαίας έρχεται ο Χριστός;
42 Δεν είπεν η γραφή ότι εκ του σπέρματος του Δαβίδ και από της κώμης Βηθλεέμ, όπου ήτο ο Δαβίδ, έρχεται ο Χριστός;
45 Ήλθον λοιπόν οι υπηρέται προς τους αρχιερείς και Φαρισαίους, και εκείνοι είπον προς αυτούς· Διά τι δεν εφέρετε αυτόν;
47 Απεκρίθησαν λοιπόν προς αυτούς οι Φαρισαίοι· Μήπως και σεις επλανήθητε;
48 Μήπως τις εκ των αρχόντων επίστευσεν εις αυτόν ή εκ των Φαρισαίων;
51 Μήπως ο νόμος ημών κρίνει τον άνθρωπον, εάν δεν ακούση παρ' αυτού πρότερον και μάθη τι πράττει;
53 Y fuése cada uno á su casa.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 7:6 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXXIII)

    I Purpose by the Lord's assistance to treat of this section of the Gospel which has just been read; nor is there a little difficulty here, lest the truth be endangered, and falsehood glory. Not that either the truth can perish, nor falsehood triumph.

  2. Commentary 7:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VII — 1-13)

    In this chapter of the Gospel, brethren, our Lord Jesus Christ has most especially commended Himself to our faith in respect of His humanity.

  3. Commentary 7:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily XLVIII)

    Nothing is worse than envy and malice; through these death entered into the world. For when the devil saw man honored, he endured not his prosperity, but used every means to destroy him. ( Wisd. ii. 24.) And from the same root one may everywhere see this same fruit produced.

  4. Quotes verse 7:30 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVI)

    This is also the reason why, when men were often desirous to take Him, it is said, "No man laid hands upon Him, for the hour of His being taken was not yet come;" nor the time of His passion, which had been foreknown by the Father; as also says the prophet Habakkuk, "By this Thou shalt be known when …

  5. Quotes verse 7:39 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

    For till then "the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified." And the prophet cries out, How long will ye be slow of heart?
