VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
2 et docebat eos in parabolis multa, et dicebat illis in doctrina sua:
3 Oid: He aquí, el sembrador salió á sembrar.
4 Et dum seminat, aliud cecidit circa viam, et venerunt volucres cæli, et comederunt illud.
8 Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam: et dabat fructum ascendentem et crescentem, et afferebat unum triginta, unum sexaginta, et unum centum.
11 Y les dijo: A vosotros es dado saber el misterio del reino de Dios; mas á los que están fuera, por parábolas todas las cosas;
16 Y asimismo éstos son los que son sembrados en pedregales: los que cuando han oído la palabra, luego la toman con gozo;
18 Y éstos son los que son sembrados entre espinas: los que oyen la palabra;
26 Decía más: Así es el reino de Dios, como si un hombre echa simiente en la tierra;
27 et dormiat, et exsurgat nocte et die, et semen germinet, et increscat dum nescit ille.
28 Ultro enim terra fructificat, primum herbam, deinde spicam, deinde plenum frumentum in spica.
28 Porque de suyo fructifica la tierra, primero hierba, luego espiga, después grano lleno en la espiga;
31 Es como el grano de mostaza, que, cuando se siembra en tierra, es la más pequeña de todas las simientes que hay en la tierra;
33 Et talibus multis parabolis loquebatur eis verbum, prout poterant audire:

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 4:28 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter XVIII)

    … if they do not call Himself the Son of the Creator of the world, that is, His Word, through whom the wood fructifies, and the fountains gush forth, and the earth gives "first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear."

  2. Quotes verse 4:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLIV)

    Therefore also another evangelist saith that He reproved them, because they do not understand; saying, "How knew ye not the parable?" But not for this cause only doth He speak in parables, but that He may also make His discourse more vivid, and fix the memory of it in them more perfectly, and bring the things before their sight.
