VUL Clementine Vulgate
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Alleluja. [Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.
107:1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
107:2 Let the redeemed by Yahweh say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
107:3 and gathered out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
4 Erraverunt in solitudine, in inaquoso; viam civitatis habitaculi non invenerunt.
107:4 They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way. They found no city to live in.
5 Esurientes et sitientes, anima eorum in ipsis defecit.
107:5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur, et de necessitatibus eorum eripuit eos;
107:6 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
107:7 He led them also by a straight way, that they might go to a city to live in.
8 Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
107:8 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
9 Quia satiavit animam inanem, et animam esurientem satiavit bonis.
107:9 For he satisfies the longing soul. He fills the hungry soul with good.
10 Sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis; vinctos in mendicitate et ferro.
107:10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron,
11 Quia exacerbaverunt eloquia Dei, et consilium Altissimi irritaverunt.
107:11 because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.
107:12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was no one to help.
107:13 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains.
15 Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
107:15 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
16 Quia contrivit portas æreas, et vectes ferreos confregit.
107:16 For he has broken the gates of bronze, and cut through bars of iron.
107:17 Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities.
107:18 Their soul abhors all kinds of food. They draw near to the gates of death.
107:19 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he saves them out of their distresses.
107:20 He sends his word, and heals them, and delivers them from their graves.
21 Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
107:21 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
22 Et sacrificent sacrificium laudis, et annuntient opera ejus in exsultatione.
107:22 Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his deeds with singing.
23 Qui descendunt mare in navibus, facientes operationem in aquis multis:
107:23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters,
24 ipsi viderunt opera Domini, et mirabilia ejus in profundo.
107:24 these see Yahweh’s deeds, and his wonders in the deep.
107:25 For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.
107:26 They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.
107:27 They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.
107:28 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.
29 Et statuit procellam ejus in auram, et siluerunt fluctus ejus.
107:29 He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.
107:30 Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.
31 Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.
107:31 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!
32 Et exaltent eum in ecclesia plebis, et in cathedra seniorum laudent eum.
107:32 Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the seat of the elders.
33 Posuit flumina in desertum, et exitus aquarum in sitim;
107:33 He turns rivers into a desert, water springs into a thirsty ground,
34 terram fructiferam in salsuginem, a malitia inhabitantium in ea.
107:34 and a fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 Posuit desertum in stagna aquarum, et terram sine aqua in exitus aquarum.
107:35 He turns a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into water springs.
36 Et collocavit illic esurientes, et constituerunt civitatem habitationis:
107:36 There he makes the hungry live, that they may prepare a city to live in,
37 et seminaverunt agros et plantaverunt vineas, et fecerunt fructum nativitatis.
107:37 sow fields, plant vineyards, and reap the fruits of increase.
107:38 He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly. He doesn’t allow their livestock to decrease.
107:39 Again, they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.
107:40 He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
107:41 Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.
42 Videbunt recti, et lætabuntur; et omnis iniquitas oppilabit os suum.
107:42 The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths.
43 Quis sapiens, et custodiet hæc, et intelliget misericordias Domini?]
107:43 Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things. They will consider the loving kindnesses of Yahweh.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 107.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CVI)

This Psalm also hath the title Allelujah prefixed to it: and this twice. But some say, that one Allelujah belongeth to the end of the former Psalm, the other to the beginning of this.

  2. Quotes verse 107:16 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVI)

How then were "the gates of brass burst, and the bars of iron broken in sunder"? By His body; for then first was a body shown, immortal, and destroying the tyranny of death.

… through an instrument or a servant, but as through His essential and hypostatic Word and Wisdom and Power, because but one action is observed in Father and Son, as for example, All things were made by Him, and He sent His Word and healed them, and That they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.
