1 Beše pak jedan bolesnik, Lazar iz Vitanije iz sela Marije i Marte, sestre njene.
5 A Isus ljubljaše Martu i sestru njenu i Lazara.
7 A potom reče učenicima: Hajdemo opet u Judeju.
9 Isus odgovori: Nije li dvanaest sahata u danu? Ko danju ide ne spotiče se, jer vidi videlo ovog sveta;
14 Entonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto;
17 A kad dođe Isus nađe ga, a on već četiri dana u grobu.
18 (A Vitanija beše blizu Jerusalima oko petnaest potrkališta.)
18 Y Bethania estaba cerca de Jerusalem, como quince estadios;
20 Kad Marta dakle ču da Isus ide, izađe preda Nj, a Marija seđaše doma.
21 Y Marta dijo á Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no fuera muerto;
22 A i sad znam da šta zaišteš u Boga daće ti Bog.
25 A Isus joj reče: Ja sam vaskrsenje i život; koji veruje mene ako i umre živeće.
26 I nijedan koji živi i veruje mene neće umreti vavek.
27 Dícele: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.
28 I ovo rekavši otide te zovnu tajno Mariju, sestru svoju govoreći: Učitelj je došao, i zove te.
29 A ona kad ču, usta brzo i otide k Njemu.
34 I reče: Gde ste ga metnuli? Rekoše Mu: Gospode! Hajde da vidiš.
34 Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y ve.
35 Udariše suze Isusu.
35 Y lloró Jesús.
36 Onda Judejci govorahu: Gledaj kako ga ljubljaše,
41 Uzeše, dakle, kamen gde ležaše mrtvac; a Isus podiže oči gore, i reče: Oče! Hvala Ti što si me uslišio.
42 A ja znadoh da me svagda slušaš; nego rekoh naroda radi koji ovde stoji, da veruju da si me Ti poslao.
43 I ovo rekavši zovnu glasno: Lazare! Iziđi napolje.
43 Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó á gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.
44 I iziđe mrtvac obavit platnom po rukama i po nogama, i lice njegovo ubrusom povezano. Isus im reče: Razrešite ga i pustite nek ide.
46 A neki od njih otidoše k farisejima i kazaše im šta učini Isus.
47 Onda glavari sveštenički i fariseji sabraše skupštinu, i govorahu: Šta ćemo činiti?
49 A jedan od njih, po imenu Kajafa, koji one godine beše poglavar sveštenički, reče im: Vi ne znate ništa;
49 Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo pontífice de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;
51 A ovo ne reče sam od sebe, nego, budući poglavar sveštenički one godine, proreče da Isusu valja umreti za narod;
55 Y la Pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca: y muchos subieron de aquella tierra á Jerusalem antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 11:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XI — 1-54)

    Among all the miracles wrought by our Lord Jesus Christ, the resurrection of Lazarus holds a foremost place in preaching. But if we consider attentively who did it, our duty is to rejoice rather than to wonder.

  2. Commentary 11:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXII)

    Many men, when they see any of those who are pleasing to God suffering anything terrible, as, for instance, having fallen into sickness, or poverty, and any other the like, are offended, not knowing that to those especially dear to God it belongeth to endure these things; since Lazarus also was one of the friends of Christ, and was sick.

  3. Quotes verse 11:54 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XXI)

    Then, when He had raised Lazarus from the dead, and plots were formed against Him by the Pharisees, He withdrew to a city called Ephraim; and from that place, as it is written "He came to Bethany six days before the passover," and going up from Bethany to Jerusalem, He there ate the passover, and suffered on the day following.

  4. Quotes verse 11:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapter 9)

    When, therefore, we read in the Gospel that the hard-heartedness of the Jews moved Him to sorrowful indignation, that He said, "I am glad for your sakes, to the intent ye may believe," that when about to raise Lazarus He even shed tears, that He earnestly desired to eat the passover with His disciples, that as His passion drew near …

  5. Quotes verse 11:42 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVI)

    … Lazarus, added also a prayer; and then, lest this should make Him appear less than Him that begat Him, He, to correct this suspicion, added, "I said these things, because of the people which standeth by, that they may believe that thou hast sent me." And neither doth He work all things as one who acted by His own power, …
