VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
2 Et accedentes pharisæi interrogabant eum: Si licet viro uxorem dimittere: tentantes eum.
3 At ille respondens, dixit eis: Quid vobis præcepit Moyses?
5 Quibus respondens Jesus, ait: Ad duritiam cordis vestri scripsit vobis præceptum istud:
5 Y respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Por la dureza de vuestro corazón os escribió este mandamiento;
10 Et in domo iterum discipuli ejus de eodem interrogaverunt eum.
11 Et ait illis: Quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, et aliam duxerit, adulterium committit super eam.
15 Amen dico vobis: Quisquis non receperit regnum Dei velut parvulus, non intrabit in illud.
16 Et complexans eos, et imponens manus super illos, benedicebat eos.
18 Jesus autem dixit ei: Quid me dicis bonum? nemo bonus, nisi unus Deus.
18 Y Jesús le dijo: ¿Por qué me dices bueno?
19 Los mandamientos sabes: No adulteres: No mates: No hurtes: No digas falso testimonio: No defraudes: Honra á tu padre y á tu madre.
20 At ille respondens, ait illi: Magister, hæc omnia observavi a juventute mea.
21 Jesus autem intuitus eum, dilexit eum, et dixit ei: Unum tibi deest: vade, quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo: et veni, sequere me.
23 Et circumspiciens Jesus, ait discipulis suis: Quam difficile qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei introibunt !
At Jesus rursus respondens ait illis: Filioli, quam difficile est, confidentes in pecuniis, in regnum Dei introire !
28 Entonces Pedro comenzó á decirle: He aquí, nosotros hemos dejado todas las cosas, y te hemos seguido.
31 Empero muchos primeros serán postreros, y postreros primeros.
33 Quia ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et senioribus, et damnabunt eum morte, et tradent eum gentibus:
36 At ille dixit eis: Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?
38 Jesus autem ait eis: Nescitis quid petatis: potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibo, aut baptismo, quo ego baptizor, baptizari?
39 At illi dixerunt ei: Possumus.
43 Mas no será así entre vosotros: antes cualquiera que quisiere hacerse grande entre vosotros, será vuestro servidor;
51 Et respondens Jesus dixit illi: Quid tibi vis faciam?
52 Jesus autem ait illi: Vade, fides tua te salvum fecit. Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur eum in via.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 10:38 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XX–XXI)

… added this redemption to the sons of Zebedee, when their mother asked that they might sit, the one on His right hand, and the other on His left, in His kingdom, saying, "Can ye be baptized with the baptism which I shall be baptized with?" Paul, too, they declare, has often set forth, in express terms, the redemption which is …
