1 In finem, pro iis qui commutabuntur. David.
·
2 [Salvum me fac, Deus, quoniam intraverunt aquæ usque ad animam meam.
69:1 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “Lilies.” By David. Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!
Veni in altitudinem maris, et tempestas demersit me.
69:2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
4 Laboravi clamans, raucæ factæ sunt fauces meæ; defecerunt oculi mei, dum spero in Deum meum.
69:3 I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail looking for my God.
69:4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I didn’t take away.
69:5 God, you know my foolishness. My sins aren’t hidden from you.
7 Non erubescant in me qui exspectant te, Domine, Domine virtutum; non confundantur super me qui quærunt te, Deus Israël.
69:6 Don’t let those who wait for you be shamed through me, Lord Yahweh of Armies. Don’t let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel.
8 Quoniam propter te sustinui opprobrium; operuit confusio faciem meam.
69:7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face.
9 Extraneus factus sum fratribus meis, et peregrinus filiis matris meæ.
69:8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s children.
10 Quoniam zelus domus tuæ comedit me, et opprobria exprobrantium tibi ceciderunt super me.
69:9 For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
11 Et operui in jejunio animam meam, et factum est in opprobrium mihi.
69:10 When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.
12 Et posui vestimentum meum cilicium; et factus sum illis in parabolam.
69:11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
13 Adversum me loquebantur qui sedebant in porta, et in me psallebant qui bibebant vinum.
69:12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.
14 Ego vero orationem meam ad te, Domine; tempus beneplaciti, Deus. In multitudine misericordiæ tuæ, exaudi me in veritate salutis tuæ.
69:13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
15 Eripe me de luto, ut non infigar; libera me ab iis qui oderunt me, et de profundis aquarum.
69:14 Deliver me out of the mire, and don’t let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
16 Non me demergat tempestas aquæ, neque absorbeat me profundum, neque urgeat super me puteus os suum.
69:15 Don’t let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Don’t let the pit shut its mouth on me.
17 Exaudi me, Domine, quoniam benigna est misericordia tua; secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum respice in me.
69:16 Answer me, Yahweh, for your loving kindness is good. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me.
18 Et ne avertas faciem tuam a puero tuo; quoniam tribulor, velociter exaudi me.
69:17 Don’t hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily!
19 Intende animæ meæ, et libera eam; propter inimicos meos, eripe me.
69:18 Draw near to my soul and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies.
20 Tu scis improperium meum, et confusionem meam, et reverentiam meam;
69:19 You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before you.
69:20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none.
22 Et dederunt in escam meam fel, et in siti mea potaverunt me aceto.
69:21 They also gave me poison for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
23 Fiat mensa eorum coram ipsis in laqueum, et in retributiones, et in scandalum.
69:22 Let their table before them become a snare. May it become a retribution and a trap.
69:23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can’t see. Let their backs be continually bent.
25 Effunde super eos iram tuam, et furor iræ tuæ comprehendat eos.
69:24 Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them.
69:25 Let their habitation be desolate. Let no one dwell in their tents.
69:26 For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt.
69:27 Charge them with crime upon crime. Don’t let them come into your righteousness.
69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.
30 Ego sum pauper et dolens; salus tua, Deus, suscepit me.
69:29 But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.
69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
32 et placebit Deo super vitulum novellum, cornua producentem et ungulas.
69:31 It will please Yahweh better than an ox, or a bull that has horns and hoofs.
33 Videant pauperes, et lætentur; quærite Deum, et vivet anima vestra:
69:32 The humble have seen it, and are glad. You who seek after God, let your heart live.
69:33 For Yahweh hears the needy, and doesn’t despise his captive people.
35 Laudent illum cæli et terra; mare, et omnia reptilia in eis.
69:34 Let heaven and earth praise him; the seas, and everything that moves therein!
36 Quoniam Deus salvam faciet Sion, et ædificabuntur civitates Juda, et inhabitabunt ibi, et hæreditate acquirent eam.
69:35 For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah. They shall settle there, and own it.
69:36 The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell therein.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 69.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXVIII)

Of this Psalm, the title seemeth not to need operose discussion: for simple and easy it appeareth. For thus it standeth: "For the end, for David himself a Psalm of a Song." But in many Psalms already we have reminded you what is "at the end: for the end of the Law is Christ for righteousness to every man believing:" …

  2. Quotes verse 69:31 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XLVI–LII)

For, says the elect David, "I will confess unto the Lord; and that will please Him more than a young bullock that hath horns and hoofs. Let the poor see it, and be glad." And again he saith, "Offer unto God the sacrifice of praise, and pay thy vows unto the Most High.

Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein; and, His bishoprick let another take;" --thus leading to the completion of the apostles, according to the words spoken by David.
