1 In finem, filiis Core. Psalmus.

2 [Audite hæc, omnes gentes; auribus percipite, omnes qui habitatis orbem:
49:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah. Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,
3 quique terrigenæ et filii hominum, simul in unum dives et pauper.
49:2 both low and high, rich and poor together.
4 Os meum loquetur sapientiam, et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam.
49:3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart will utter understanding.
5 Inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam; aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam.
49:4 I will incline my ear to a proverb. I will solve my riddle on the harp.
6 Cur timebo in die mala? iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me.
49:5 Why should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
7 Qui confidunt in virtute sua, et in multitudine divitiarum suarum, gloriantur.
49:6 Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches—
8 Frater non redimit, redimet homo: non dabit Deo placationem suam,
49:7 none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.
9 et pretium redemptionis animæ suæ. Et laborabit in æternum;
49:8 For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough,
10 et vivet adhuc in finem.
49:9 that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.
49:10 For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.
12 et sepulchra eorum domus illorum in æternum; tabernacula eorum in progenie et progenie: vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis.
49:11 Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.
49:12 But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish.
14 Hæc via illorum scandalum ipsis; et postea in ore suo complacebunt.
(Selah.)
49:13 This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.
15 Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt: mors depascet eos. Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino; et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum.
49:14 They are appointed as a flock for Sheol. Death shall be their shepherd. The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning. Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, far from their mansion.
(Selah.)
49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah.
49:16 No temas cuando se enriquece alguno, cuando aumenta la gloria de su casa;
49:16 Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
49:17 for when he dies he will carry nothing away. His glory won’t descend after him.
19 Quia anima ejus in vita ipsius benedicetur; confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei.
49:18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul— and men praise you when you do well for yourself—
49:19 he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.
49:20 A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

Chapter V.--The author returns to his former argument, and shows that there was but one …

  3. Cita 49:20 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XXII–XXIV)

For this he doth by the discernment of his mind, whereby he perceiveth the things "of the Spirit of God;" whereas, otherwise, man being placed in honour, had no understanding, and is compared unto the brute beasts, and is become like unto them. In Thy Church, therefore, O our God, according to Thy grace which Thou hast accorded unto it, …

  4. Cita 49:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily V)

  5. Cita 49:11 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapter 20)

It is of such the Psalmist says, "They call their lands after their own names." Wherefore they incur what is written in another psalm: "Thou, O Lord, in Thy city wilt despise their image." But as for the son of Seth, the son of the resurrection, let him hope to call on the name of the Lord God.
