89:3 Hice alianza con mi escogido; juré á David mi siervo, [diciendo]:
7 Ꙗ҆́кѡ кто̀ во ѡ҆́блацѣхъ ᲂу҆равни́тсѧ гдⷭ҇еви; ᲂу҆подо́битсѧ гдⷭ҇еви въ сынѣ́хъ бж҃їихъ;
89:19 Entonces hablaste en visión á tu santo, y dijiste: Yo he puesto el socorro sobre valiente; he ensalzado [un] escogido de mi pueblo.
89:30 Si dejaren sus hijos mi ley, y no anduvieren en mis juicios;
89:31 Si profanaren mis estatutos, y no guardaren mis mandamientos;
36 Є҆ди́ною клѧ́хсѧ ѡ҆ ст҃ѣ́мъ мое́мъ: а҆́ще дв҃дꙋ солжꙋ̀;
89:38 Mas tú desechaste y menospreciaste á tu ungido; y te has airado [con él].
89:42 Has ensalzado la diestra de sus enemigos; has alegrado á todos sus adversarios.
(Selah.)
47 Доко́лѣ, гдⷭ҇и, ѿвраща́ешисѧ въ коне́цъ, разжже́тсѧ ꙗ҆́кѡ ѻ҆́гнь гнѣ́въ тво́й;
89:46 ¿Hasta cuándo, oh Jehová? ¿te esconderás para siempre? ¿arderá tu ira como el fuego?
48 Помѧнѝ, кі́й мо́й соста́въ: є҆да́ бо всꙋ́е созда́лъ є҆сѝ всѧ̑ сы́ны человѣ́чєскїѧ;
49 Кто̀ є҆́сть человѣ́къ, и҆́же поживе́тъ и҆ не ᲂу҆́зритъ сме́рти, и҆зба́витъ дꙋ́шꙋ свою̀ и҆з̾ рꙋкѝ а҆́довы;
89:48 ¿Qué hombre vivirá y no verá muerte? ¿librarás su vida del poder del sepulcro? (Selah.)
50 Гдѣ̀ сꙋ́ть млⷭ҇ти твоѧ̑ дрє́внїѧ, гдⷭ҇и, и҆́миже клѧ́лсѧ є҆сѝ дв҃дꙋ во и҆́стинѣ твое́й;
89:52 Bendito Jehová para siempre. Amén, y Amén.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 89.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXVIII)

    The Title of this eighty-seventh Psalm contains a fresh subject for enquiry: the words occurring here, "for Melech to respond," being nowhere else found.

  2. Quotes verse 89:32 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Chapters 5–8)

    Their fierce and bloody minds were awed, and bridled, and marvellously tempered by Him who so long before said by His prophet, "I will visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquities with stripes; nevertheless my loving-kindness will I not utterly take from them."
