VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Et ingressus perambulabat Jericho.
2 Et ecce vir nomine Zachæus: et hic princeps erat publicanorum, et ipse dives:
6 Et festinans descendit, et excepit illum gaudens.
12 Dixit ergo: Homo quidam nobilis abiit in regionem longinquam accipere sibi regnum, et reverti.
14 Cives autem ejus oderant eum: et miserunt legationem post illum, dicentes: Nolumus hunc regnare super nos.
16 Venit autem primus dicens: Domine, mna tua decem mnas acquisivit.
17 Et ait illi: Euge bone serve, quia in modico fuisti fidelis, eris potestatem habens super decem civitates.
18 Et alter venit, dicens: Domine, mna tua fecit quinque mnas.
19 Et huic ait: Et tu esto super quinque civitates.
22 Dicit ei: De ore tuo te judico, serve nequam.
23 καὶ διατί οὐκ ἔδωκας τὸ ἀργύριόν μου ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν, καὶ ἐγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν ἔπραξα αὐτό;
25 Et dixerunt ei: Domine, habet decem mnas.
27 Verumtamen inimicos meos illos, qui noluerunt me regnare super se, adducite huc: et interficite ante me.
28 Et his dictis, præcedebat ascendens Jerosolymam.
31 Et si quis vos interrogaverit: Quare solvitis? sic dicetis ei: Quia Dominus operam ejus desiderat.
33 λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπον οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς· τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον;
34 At illi dixerunt: Quia Dominus eum necessarium habet.
35 Et duxerunt illum ad Jesum. Et jacentes vestimenta sua supra pullum, imposuerunt Jesum.
36 Eunte autem illo, substernebant vestimenta sua in via:
37 et cum appropinquaret jam ad descensum montis Oliveti, cœperunt omnes turbæ discipulorum gaudentes laudare Deum voce magna super omnibus, quas viderant, virtutibus,
38 dicentes: Benedictus, qui venit rex in nomine Domini: pax in cælo, et gloria in excelsis.
40 Quibus ipse ait: Dico vobis, quia si hi tacuerint, lapides clamabunt.
43 Quia venient dies in te: et circumdabunt te inimici tui vallo, et circumdabunt te: et coangustabunt te undique:
45 Et ingressus in templum, cœpit ejicere vendentes in illo, et ementes,
48 et non inveniebant quid facerent illi. Omnis enim populus suspensus erat, audiens illum.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 19:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter VIII)

… in the animal class;--the spiritual, again, when He said, "Let the dead bury their dead, but go thou and preach the kingdom of God," and when He said to Zaccheus the publican, "Make haste, and come down, for to-day I must abide in thine house" --for these they declared to have belonged to the spiritual class.

  2. Quotes verse 19:10 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapter 4)

For not only to God the Father, but also to His Only-begotten, who came to seek what was lost, we had been known already even so far as to be chosen in Him before the foundation of the world.

Read in context · Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, series 1, vol. 2 (1887)

  3. Quotes verse 19:40 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XIII)

Why, these things, if we be silent "the stones will immediately cry out;" so plain are they, and manifest, and more lucid than the sunbeam itself.

Read in context · Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, series 1, vol. 10 (1888)

  4. Quotes verse 19:23 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture V)

Guard them with reverence, lest per chance the enemy despoil any who have grown slack; or lest some heretic pervert any of the truths delivered to you. For faith is like putting money into the bank, even as we have now done; but from you God requires the accounts of the deposit.

  5. Quotes verse 19:42 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XX–XXI)

Further, when, as He drew nigh to Jerusalem, He wept over it and said, "If thou hadst known, even thou, in this thy day, the things that belong unto thy peace, but they are hidden from thee," by this word "hidden" He showed the abstruse nature of Bythus.
